A Christian doctor who lost his job after refusing to use a transgender pronoun has just lost an appeal over the decision — but he’s not backing down … far from it.
Dr. David Mackereth, 56, is a British doctor who had more than 30 years on the job. A National Health Services employee, he was fired by the Department for Work and Pensions in July because he would not use a transgender pronoun. He also lost a case this week before the Employment Tribunal in England where the judge told him his beliefs are “incompatible with human dignity.”

Defending his beliefs, Mackereth said he believes “gender is defined by biology and genetics” and that the “Bible teaches us that God made humans male or female.”
Though he lost the case, Mackereth says he is not backing down.
“I believe that I have to appeal in order to fight for the freedom of Christians – and any other NHS member of staff – to speak the truth,” he said. “If they cannot, then freedom of speech has died in this country, with serious ramifications for the practice of medicine in the U.K.”
Mackereth’s beliefs became an issue when a supervisor reportedly told him to refer to a “man six foot tall with a beard” as a “she.” He refused to do so.
“No doctor, or researcher, or philosopher, can demonstrate or prove that a person can change sex,” Mackereth said to Fox News about the matter. “Without intellectual and moral integrity, medicine cannot function and my 30 years as a doctor are now considered irrelevant compared to the risk that someone else might be offended.”
“It is deeply disturbing that this is the first time in the history of English law that a judge has ruled that free citizens must engage in compelled speech,” Andrea Williams, CEO of the Christian Legal Centre, which represents Mackereth, said.
As his case before the Tribunal, the court mentioned the Bible verse Genesis 1:27: “So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.”
“Belief in Genesis 1:27, lack of belief in transgenderism and conscientious objection to transgenderism in our judgment are incompatible with human dignity and conflict with the fundamental rights of others, specifically here, transgender individuals,” the court said in its decision.
He currently works as an NHS emergency doctor in another city.
Mackereth previously said in a video put out by Christian Concern that he is concerned about the standard applied to gender pronouns at the moment.
“Nobody has ever told me that it was wrong to use pronouns according to biological sex. This is just the way we use them and it seems normal, it seems natural. It’s important to do that. That’s biological,” he said.
“We don’t when a child’s born say, ‘oh, it’s got male genitalia, but we don’t know what sex it is yet,'” the doctor continued. “I don’t think parents would put up with that. I hope parents wouldn’t put up with that.
As transgender pronouns hit the mainstream more and more, they are causing issues. All-male schools have been forced to accept transgender students. The refusal to use transgender pronouns has also led to legal issues for people who refuse to comply.
