‘Instead of breaking up families, we should break up ICE,’ says 2020 hopeful Julian Castro

Julian Castro is the latest White House hopeful trying to win over extreme leftists by saying he will end U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Speaking at the Netroots Nation conference in Philadelphia on Saturday, the former Housing and Urban Development secretary in the Obama adminsitration threw out a clearly prepared line meant to capitalize on controversy surrounding family separation policies regarding migrants who attempt to illegally sneak across the border.

“I’ve said that instead of breaking up families, we should break up ICE,” Castro said.

Castro previously announced that if he were to win the presidency then he would split up ICE’s deportation and enforcement arm from the national security arm, which investigates crimes like drug and sex trafficking.

While speaking on Saturday, Castro also went after Vice President Mike Pence for some viral images that came out of a Friday visit the vice president made to a migrant detention center.

“This administration traffics in cruelty, and the images that we saw yesterday were just one more example of that. He’s betting basically that there are enough Americans out there whose fear and paranoia could be stoked in a way that they’re going to go out and vote for him,” Castro said of President Donald Trump and his administration.

Pence visited a migrant detention center on Friday. One video that has gone viral shows detained migrants held behind a chain-link fence with the ground littered with blankets. Some of the migrants shouted, “no shower!” to reporters accompanying Pence. The area was a temporary holding area.

Pence said after visiting the detention center that the conditions he saw are evidence of a “system that [is] overwhelmed.”

Pence’s comments came at a roundtable discussion after he toured a temporary holding facility near Donna-Rio Bravo International Bridge in Texas. The 1000-capacity detention center reportedly contained around 800 detainees at the time of Pence’s visit.

The vice president continued by defending ICE agents and pushing back against reports of mistreatment.

“What’s not real is the slanderous allegations of heartless mistreatment by Customs and Border Protection. I can see it in your eyes, I can hear it in your voice, about the care and concern,” he said.

He added, “I couldn’t be more impressed with the compassionate work that our Customs and Border Protection are doing here at this border facility.”

Pence took to Twitter following his migrant detention center tour to slam CNN for their coverage of the event.

“CNN is so dishonest. Today we took reporters to a detention facility on the border for families and children and all told us they were being treated well,” the vice president tweeted.

He continued, “The crisis at our southern border is not a “manufactured crisis”, it is real and is overwhelming our system. To show this, we also visited an overcrowded facility for adult men, many of whom have been arrested multiple times.”

He then added, “Rather than broadcast the full story, showing the compassionate care the American people are providing to vulnerable families, tonight CNN only played video of men in the temporary facility and didn’t play any footage of the family facility at all.”
