ICE director rips defiant Dems for denying walls work: ‘Why do they lock their doors at night?’

Democrats were rebuked after repeatedly claiming in a meeting with President Donald Trump that walls don’t work.

Ronald Vitiello, Acting Director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, slammed Democrats and others who are opposed to the president’s plan to build a security wall along the U.S.-Mexico border, telling Fox News’ Bret Baier that their resistance “makes no sense.”

“You will always have a safer border where you have that barrier,” the ICE director with 33 years experience with Border Patrol said Wednesday on “Special Report.”

“There’s no question in my mind about that,” he added. “And people who don’t believe it works, why do they have fences around their homes? Why do they lock their doors at night?”

“It makes no sense to me that this is getting bottled up in the politics. Walls work,” Vitiello said, noting he was “disappointed” with the people in a meeting at the White House convened to end to the partial government shutdown.

Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen was also disappointed in the behavior of Democrats at the meeting as she attempted to deliver a briefing on the U.S.-Mexico border. In a tweet following the meeting, Nielsen said the Democrats who were in attendance didn’t want to hear about the “security & humanitarian crisis” at the nation’s southern border, despite all of their grandstanding on the issue.

“Kicking the can down the road is not the answer,” she added, noting that the situation is getting worse.

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy also expressed his frustration with Democrats after the meeting.

“I’m a little disappointed with I would say some on the other side. Once the Secretary started, Senator Schumer interrupted her and they really didn’t want to hear it and they challenged some of the points the Secretary made,” the Californian Republican told reporters.

White House deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley slammed Democrats who orchestrated the disruption of Nielsen’s presentation, telling Fox News he had “never seen anything like it” in his life.

“Democrats in the room either don’t care that there is a humanitarian crisis on the border or just prefer ignorance. It was incredibly disheartening that they don’t want to know the facts when making policy,” DHS Spokeswoman Katie Waldman told the Daily Caller.

Those facts include a depletion of resources at the border that Vitello said has presented ICE with an “unprecedented crisis” at the border. Vitiello noted that more people are being encouraged to cross the U.S. border as immigration laws have provided loopholes for them to do so.

“We’re running out of resources, and the status quo is just not acceptable,” he told Baier, pointing out that of the more than 2,000 people who make it to the border daily, 65 percent of them are children traveling alone or families with children.

ICE is already in “unprecedented territory,” Vitiello added, saying the partial government shutdown is also creating a “disruption” to its employees.
