Acting FBI director throws monkey wrench straight into liberal narrative on why Comey was fired

Liberals can put away their tin foil hats for a while.

Desperate to prove there was something amiss about the president firing James Comey, liberals came up with theories about why the FBI director was terminated. One such idea was that the president’s decision was made after the agency asked for more money to continue its investigation of alleged collusion between Russia and the Trump campaign during the 2016 election.

But new Acting FBI Director Andrew McCabe just extinguished the sparks the left was trying to fan into reality.

McCabe spoke Thursday at a Senate Intelligence Committee hearing, discrediting the conspiracy talking points.

The acting director, who stepped into his new position Wednesday after Trump’s dismissal of Comey, believed the investigation was “adequately resourced” and said he could not confirm that a request by Comey for additional funds from the Justice Department was ever made.

“I’m not aware of that request and it’s not consistent with my understanding of how we request additional resources,” McCabe replied to a question by Republican Sen. Susan Collins.

He pointed out that a request for resources would not normally go to the executive branch, but to Congress which appropriates money.

“We don’t typically request resources for an individual case,” McCabe added, further dispelling the theory that Trump fired Comey after he asked for funding in order to stop the probe. “I strongly believe that the Russia investigation is adequately resourced.”

He also confirmed that the FBI was continuing its work, unimpeded by the recent events.

“It is my opinion and belief that the FBI will continue to pursue this investigation vigorously and completely,” he said.

McCabe refused to throw President Trump under the bus when answering a series of questions by Sen. Richard Burr. The North Carolina Republican asked McCabe about Trump’s letter to Comey alleging that the president was told on “three separate occasions” by the former director that he wasn’t the target of the investigation.

McCabe declined to confirm, stating that he could not comment on conversations between the two men.

Liberals’ hopes that McCabe would confirm their narratives appear to have just gone up in smoke.
