‘Basket of deplorables’: Hillary Clinton insults millions of Americans and sparks massive national outrage

It has come to this.

Struggling to shake Donald Trump in the polls, Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton turned her sights instead on her GOP rival’s supporters, who she accused of a litany of offenses against society during a rally Friday evening.

“To just be grossly generalistic, you can put half of Trump supporters into what I call the basket of deplorables,” Clinton told the crowd. “Right? Racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic, Islamaphobic, you name it. And unfortunately, there are people like that and he has lifted them up.”

Not content with smearing just one half of Trump’s supporters, Clinton went after the other half, who she stopped just short of calling the “bitter clingers.”

“That other basket of people are people who feel that the government has let them down, the economy has let them down, nobody cares about them, nobody worries about what happens to their lives and their futures, and they’re just desperate for change,” she said.

Trump campaign manager Kellyanne Conway wasted little time jumping on the slight — the irony not lost on how 2012 GOP nominee Mitt Romney was slammed for putting women in a binder while Clinton places millions in “baskets.”

“One day after promising to be aspirational & uplifting, Hillary insults millions of Americans. #desperate,” Conway tweeted.

Social media exploded in outrage over Clinton’s barb, with #BasketOfDeplorables quickly becoming the top trending hashtag on Twitter.
