Donald Trump released a new ad in his presidential campaign as his rival Hillary Clinton was officially named the Democratic nominee.
But Trump’s ad did not even mention Clinton, focusing instead on Vermont’s U.S. Bernie Sanders, who is no longer in the race.
The Republican nominee posted the ad Thursday, attacking Sanders for not being able to “handle pressure.”
With the caption, “Bernie caved!” the ad shows video of Sanders urging upset supporters to vote for Clinton as well as footage from when Black Lives Matter protesters took over the stage at a Sanders campaign event.
Though it seems like a strange waste of resources, perhaps there is an underlying strategy in bashing a non-candidate.
@JordanChariton @realDonaldTrump @BernieSanders This is just trying to peel Sanders votes away from HRC & hedging bets on more leak damage

@BuhByeGOP when you realize that money you donated to Trump’s campaign is used to attack the wrong opponent. pic.twitter.com/EoYrHG6e5I

Haven’t seen it but keeping Dems fighting the insurgency definitely helps Trump. @SimonMaloy https://t.co/2lWce2hxfa
