In a bizarre case, students in an Alaska school were suspended for plotting to poison and kill another classmate. What takes this from bad to worse is the fact that the students are all first-graders.
According to the school principal, three students at Winterberry Charter School in Anchorage allegedly planned to use silica gel, thinking it was a toxic substance, to poison a classmate, reported KTUU TV.  An email was sent to parents of students informing them about the incident on March 22.
“Three students in the class were planning on using the silica gel packets (these are not actually poison, but the students believed they were) from their lunchtime seaweed to poison and kill another student,” a portion of the email from the principal stated.
A spokeswoman for the Anchorage Police Department said another student who learned of the plan alerted adults.
“We’re grateful that that student was able to speak up and obviously at such a young age,” said Jennifer Castro, adding that the murder plot was never put into action.
“The important lesson here is to really teach your kids if they hear something like this, something where someone intends to do harm to someone else, they should tell someone that they trust right away,” Castro said.
No charges were expected against the students who would return to school after the suspension, the Anchorage School District confirmed according to KTUU. The police said the appropriate punishment needed to be decided by the school and the school district, which opted for a multi-day suspension for the three young girls.
For one parent, however, suspensions seem like a minor punishment for a foiled murder case.
“Is that the appropriate punishment for a school that has a several year waiting list to get in?” asked the father, who wished to remain unidentified. “There’s plenty of other kids that are waiting to get in this school,”he said, Â adding that the suspended girls don’t deserve to be at Winterberry, which has a waiting list of over 400.
