While presidential candidates fought it out at the Republican debate Thursday, Donald Trump held his own event in Iowa at the same time to raise funds for veterans organizations.
In a statement, Trump claimed to have raised $6 million, with $1 million of that coming personally from the GOP front-runner, by the end of the hour-long event in Des Moines.
Mike Huckabee and Rick Santorum joined Trump at the event which benefited 22 different organizations, according to the statement.
An unbelievable night in Iowa with our great Veterans! We raised $6,000,000.00 while the politicians talked! #GOPDebate

“Our Veterans have been treated like third-class citizens,” Trump said in the statement, “and it is my great honor to support them with this $1 million dollar contribution – they are truly incredible people. We are going to strengthen our military, take care of our Vets and Make America Great Again.”
The website for the donations says “Over $620,000 raised.”
There was plenty of support on social media, and naysayers were quickly turned on their heads.
@snickerfritz04 @realDonaldTrump super shameful. I mean super. Raising $6MM for OUR vets. Freaking WINNER!
