US restaurant takes down sign advertising bacon after Muslim protest; ‘UNREAL’

A Vermont restaurant removed a sign advertising part of its breakfast menu to avoid offending a Muslim resident.

Sneakers Bistro had put up the sign as part of “Operation Bloom,” a program launched by the city of Winooski to maintain flower beds next to area roads.  Business owners were allowed to advertise in the area they maintained, WPTZ News reported Sunday.

The restaurant put up a “yield” sign that also said, “Sneakers Bacon.”

A woman, identifying herself as Muslim, wrote in an online community forum that she was offended by the sign, saying it was “insensitive to those who do not consume pork.

Sneakers’ owners decided that rather than offend the woman, they would remove the sign.

They also indicated there might be some security concerns as well.

“We are here to serve people BREAKFAST, not politics,” the management wrote on its Facebook page. “We removed the sign that was located on public property as a gesture of respect for our diverse community. There were also concerns raised about safety. Removing it was not a difficult decision. We still love bacon. We still love eggs. Please have the political conversation elsewhere.”

Needless to say, the decision sparked outrage on Twitter, including these tweets:
