Actress Debra Messing found herself apologizing for a selfie she posted as news broke of a shooting in Los Angeles.

The “Will and Grace” star came under fire after tweeting a message amid news of an active shooter on the UCLA campus.

Participating in a campaign to raise awareness for gun violence, Messing’s selfie showed her wearing a t-shirt promoting the movie “Under the Gun.” The documentary film purported to show Americans’ views on gun safety, but was exposed as having been deceptively edited.

Although Messing deleted the tweet, it was too late to stop the backlash as social media users slammed the actress for what they saw as insensitivity.

There were some Twitter users who were on her side, however.

Messing eventually had to admit her mistake in posting the selfie and apologized, saying she was “shocked and struck by the horrible irony” of the post’s timing.

Even her apology brought mixed reactions from Twitter users.
