Former Vice President Mike Pence took offense at a remark made by sanctimonious Senator Mitt Romney (R-Utah) passing judgment on him and accusing him of violating his religious faith in the service of his ex-boss, former President Donald J. Trump.
In his upcoming book about the Trump-hating Romney, author McKay Coppins writes of the senator’s observations, “[Nobody] had been more loyal, more willing to smile when he saw absurdities, more willing to ascribe God’s will to things that were ungodly than Mike Pence,” according to excerpts published by The Atlantic, the elitist publication that he works for.
Pence appeared on Sunday morning’s edition of “State of the Union” on CNN where he was pressed by host Jake Tapper about the Mormon senator’s claims about the eschewing of his devout Christian faith during his time spent as Trump’s veep.

Speaking with the 2024 GOP presidential candidate from Iowa where he has been campaigning, Tapper brought up the profile and Romney’s questioning of his Christian convictions.
“What do you say to that?” Tapper asked. “Do you think you used your faith to justify ungodly things as vice president as Mitt Romney believes?”
“You know, when that phone rang in 2016 my wife and I went to prayer about the invitation to join the national ticket,” Pence replied. “I believe we were called to serve and I’m incredibly proud of the record of the Trump-Pence administration.”
“In just those four short years we rebuilt our military, revived our economy, and appointed three conservatives to our courts that gave us a new beginning for the right to life,” he said, referring to the three Supreme Court justices put on the bench of the nation’s highest court by President Trump.
“Look, Mitt Romney has no idea what I was doing in the administration,” Pence continued. “I haven’t talked to Mitt Romney for years, and you know, I think he can go off into retirement. I know he was even critical of his old running mate Paul Ryan in the pages of that book… I know the stance that we took. I know the stance that we maintained, and I’ll always believe we were called to that fight, and I believe in this moment that my family’s called now to step forward here in Iowa.”
Romney, a wealthy man who could have retired to spend time with his family instead of going to Washington, D.C. to do battle with Trump as a U.S. Senator in 2018 just announced that he won’t be seeking a second term next year.

“I have spent my last 25 years in public service of one kind or another. At the end of another term, I’d be in my mid-eighties. Frankly, it’s time for a new generation of leaders. They’re the ones that need to make the decisions that will shape the world they will be living in,” said Romney.
“Few figures in American politics have seen more and said less than Mitt Romney,” reads the Amazon description of “Romney: A Reckoning” the book by Coppins that will be released next month. “An outspoken dissident in Donald Trump’s GOP, he has made headlines in recent years for standing alone against the forces he believes are poisoning the party he once led. Romney was the first senator in history to vote to remove from office a president of his own party. When that president’s supporters went on to storm the US Capitol, Romney delivered a thundering speech from the Senate floor accusing his fellow Republicans of stoking insurrection.”
“Despite these moments of public courage, Romney has shared very little about what he’s witnessed behind the scenes over his three decades in politics—in GOP cloakrooms and caucus lunches, in his private meetings with Donald Trump and his family, in his dealings with John McCain, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Joe Biden, Mitch McConnell, Joe Manchin, and Kyrsten Sinema. Now, exclusively for this biography, Romney has provided a window to his most private thoughts,” the description reads.
