Gen. Milley denies US military is ‘too woke’: ‘I’m not even sure what that word truly means’

Army Gen. Mark Milley doesn’t think the military is “woke.”

In fact, he’s not sure he knows “what the word truly means.”

In an interview with CNN’s Fareed Zakaria on Sunday, the “GPS” host noted that Milley does “inject” himself into politics and cited “wokeism” as an example.

“You talk about how the military is not woke,” Zakaria said. “How the military officers should be reading Karl Marx.”

“Is the U.S. military too woke?” he asked the Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman.

“No, not at all,” Milley replied. “You know, I’m not even sure what that word truly means.

“But I would tell you that the military I see is a military that is exceptionally strong,” he stated. “It’s powerful. It’s ready.”

“In fact,” he added, “our readiness rates, the way we measure readiness, is better now than they’ve been in years.”

As BizPac Review has reported, more than 160 retired U.S. generals and admirals disagree.

In June, they wrote a letter calling on Congress to ban funding for diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives (DEI) in the military.

“This administration has a growing obsession with Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, or DEI, a college campus fad that teaches America is fundamentally racist and can only be fixed by discriminating against American males with European ancestry,” wrote retired U.S. military officer Hung Cao. “DEI is unpopular in the military, a place where troops may be rightfully hesitant to serve under a commander selected for the color of his skin rather than the content of his character.”

“The defense bill markups also look to reverse policies favoring individuals who identify as part of the LGBTQ community,” BizPac Review reported at the time. “According to the bill, funding will be prohibited for individuals seeking sex change procedures, such as reassignment surgery. It will also ban funding for drag queen story hour in military installations and in schools funded by the Department of Defense Education Activity (DODEA).”

Last year, the U.S. Navy was dragged for using a drag queen influencer to boost plummeting recruitment numbers.

And, more recently, the Pentagon wrapped up Pride Month with a celebration of Maj. Rachel Jones, who came out as a transgender female.

“Maj. Rachel Jones found solace after coming out as a transgender female. Her journey from battling depression & suicidal thoughts to embracing authenticity inspires us all,” the Department of Defense posted on what was then Twitter. “In a world where LGBTQ+ voices were often marginalized, she battled depression and contemplated suicide. Today, her resilience shines as a hope for others facing similar struggles.”

But don’t try to tell Milley that the military is too woke. He takes “exception” to that.

“This is a military that’s dedicated to maintaining our readiness or capabilities or lethality. And the thing that we also need to focus on is the modernization for the future character of war that I see fundamentally changing. But this — military is a lot of things but woke it is not,” he stated on CNN. “So, I take exception to that.”

“I think that people say those things for reasons that are their own reasons,” Milley said. “But it’s not true. It’s not accurate.”

“And it is not to say, by the way, that there is — there is not some things out there that are — could be fit into that category,” he added. “But I don’t think it certainly is — it is not a broad-brush description of the U.S. military as it exists today.”
