Socialist lawmakers are calling for additional taxes to help offset the costs of taking care of the tens of thousands of illegal aliens who have arrived in New York City since last year, straining resources as Gotham’s Democrat mayor is warning of financial ruination.
Two state lawmakers proposed soaking productive citizens with a migrant tax, choosing to address how to pay for the influx of new arrivals rather than more constructive solutions that would either stem the tide or ship them elsewhere as anger and desperation are both rising.
“We should increase taxes because it’s economically just policy to offset all costs for our state to function,” said New York State Senator Julia Salazar, a Brooklyn Democrat.
“I’d say that even if our city and state hadn’t seen an increase in migrants seeking asylum, this moment makes it all the more important for the wealthy to pay their fair share of taxes,” the socialist senator told the New York Post.
She also lamented a “slew” of tax hikes on high earners that were passed in 2021 that will sunset instead of becoming permanent additional burdens.
Salazar’s zeal to sock it to taxpayers was shared by her fellow Brooklynite, Democrat State Senator Jabari Brisport.
“We’re still organizing to tax the rich through the same revenue-raising bills we’ve been fighting for for years,” said the former Black Lives Matter activist who was endorsed by crypto-communist U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) and socialist diva Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) who both serve as role models for the new class of budding young wealth redistributors.
Another leftist Democrat, the chief of staff for socialist Assemblywoman Jessica González-Rojas of Queens suggested that New Yorkers shouldn’t have to suffer a loss of services to pay for illegals when the bill can be footed by simply taxing taxing higher-income earners.
“A reminder: This is a choice. We are cutting services for New Yorkers when we could #TaxTheRich. Don’t blame migrants for lack of leadership,” said Brian Romero, according to the New York Post.
Times are getting tougher in the Big Apple which is being crushed by the cost of the migrants to the point where Democrat Mayor Eric Adams has ordered agencies to submit plans to slice their budgets by up to 15 percent after stating that the flood of 110,000 illegal aliens is destroying the city.

New Yorkers aren’t likely to react favorably to any new taxes to underwrite the illegals and tempers are fraying as was seen when angry citizens heckled Democrat lawmakers including Ocasio-Cortez and Rep. Jerrold Nadler (D-NY) at a Friday news conference in Midtown.

Critics however suggest that the socialist solution will only lead to more people getting out of New York in favor of other states without leftist political leadership, one of them, a longtime aide to former New York Governor George Pataki, the last Republican to have been elected to the office in the deep blue state.
“They will raise the tax on just about anything you can think of that moves or walks. And quite frankly continue the outer migration of people to Florida,” said the aide.
