‘Something’s not right’: Calls of a ‘cover up’ explode when Garland appoints special counsel in Hunter probe

Attorney General Merrick Garland cemented America’s new banana republic by appointing US Attorney David Weiss as the special counsel overseeing the probe into Hunter Biden’s corruption.

Garland made the announcement on Friday.

Weiss will be in charge of the “ongoing investigation” of Hunter Biden “as well as for any other matters that arose or may arise from that investigation,” the Justice Department declared in a statement.

Weiss was already overseeing the Hunter Biden probe and requested to be appointed special counsel on Tuesday. Garland quickly agreed and said it was “in the public interest” to do so when, in effect, it looks like an empty gesture.

Garland asserted that the appointment “reinforces for the American people the Department’s commitment to both independence and accountability in particularly sensitive matters.”

NBC News reported, “The move was announced shortly before prosecutors from Weiss’s team revealed in a court filing the plea talks over tax and gun charges against the president’s son had broken down and the case would likely have to go to trial in California or Washington, D.C.”

“Hunter Biden agreed to plead guilty to misdemeanor charges related to his failure to pay income taxes earlier this year. But while standing in court last month waiting to enter the plea, the agreement fell apart over confusion about a separate gun charge,” the media outlet added.

Delaware Judge Maryellen Noreika told the attorneys for and against Hunter Biden to go back to the drawing board and find a constitutional resolution. Hunter Biden entered a not-guilty plea.

Hunter Biden’s attorneys stated that they thought the plea agreement would take care of all charges facing the first son, but prosecutors indicated that there were other investigations that were ongoing.

“After the hearing, the parties continued negotiating but reached an impasse. A trial is therefore in order,” prosecutors announced in their Friday filing.

A source told NBC News that the White House had no idea that Weiss would be appointed special counsel.

Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH), chair of the House Judiciary Committee, slammed the appointment. He had called for a special counsel but this specific appointment was likely not what he intended.

“David Weiss can’t be trusted and this is just a new way to whitewash the Biden family’s corruption. Weiss has already signed off on a sweetheart plea deal that was so awful and unfair that a federal judge rejected it,” Jordan’s spokesperson, Russell Dye, commented.

RealClearInvestigations reporter Paul Sperry also pointed out a disturbing side note to all this, “DEVELOPING: By suddenly acquiring special counsel status, Hill investigators say embattled prosecutor David Weiss can now avoid testifying next month before the House Judiciary Committee and face grilling over reports he helped obstruct a broader investigation into Hunter Biden.”

This is not the first controversial special counsel Garland has appointed since he took over the Justice Department in 2021.

He also appointed Jack Smith as special counsel in November 2022 to oversee two investigations into former President Trump. Those probes are for Trump’s alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election and the handling of classified documents after he stepped down from the presidency.

Smith has so far obtained two indictments against the former president; one in a DC court which accuses him of defrauding the US in an effort to prevent the transfer of power after the last presidential election and a second one in a Florida court for allegedly mishandling national secrets.

Robert Hur was appointed by Garland in January to investigate classified documents that were found in President Biden’s office and residence. The documents were from his time as vice president.

According to NBC News, the president’s attorneys and Hur have been negotiating terms for Biden to be interviewed.
