Former President Donald J. Trump has been criticized for his recent jab at his GOP adversary Chris Christie over his weight, with some saying that referring to him as a “fat pig” was over the line, but he has a defender in Megyn Kelly.
The conservative commentator who has had her own ups and downs with Trump stuck up for him on Thursday’s edition of her SiriusXM show, discussing the 2024 frontrunner’s remarks with Rep. Wesley Hunt (R-Texas) and suggesting that the insult-spewing former New Jersey governor had it coming to him.
“Chris Christie’s basically, I mean, every chance he gets, he calls Trump a criminal. I’d rather somebody called me a fat pig than a criminal,” she said, noting that Christie has taken more than his share of cheap shots at the former president.
“Absolutely,” the Texas Republican said, agreeing with Kelly.
“And this is theater. This is politics, and President Trump gets this better than anybody else,” he added, stating that Trump knows how to drive his opponents’ polling numbers down with his attacks to chase them from the race. “And that’s exactly what he’s doing.”
“If we’ve watched… if we’ve known anything over the course of the past few years, President Trump is kind of the master at painting someone as something and then they are done,” Hunt added. “And not just done, really at the time, their political career is actually gonna be in jeopardy for the future and that’s all this is. This is actually a very smart play by President Trump. If he can even show some compassion by saying he’s not a fat pig but he’s out eating, it’s so tongue-in-cheek…and even watching it, I cannot help but laugh.”

“No, Christie’s…he’s eating right now. He can’t be bothered,” Trump said in response to a member of the audience at his Tuesday rally in Windham, New Hampshire. He then gestured at the audience and said, “Sir, please do not call him a fat pig.”
”That’s very disrespectful. Don’t call him…see, I’m, I’m trying to be nice. Don’t call him a fat pig. You can’t, can’t do that. So now, because you’re not allowed to do that, and therefore we’re not going to do it, okay? We want to be very civil,” Trump added to laughter from the audience.
“Like, if you’re going to get nasty with him, he’s going to get nasty with you,” Kelly later added, speaking from first-hand experience having feuded with Trump, but recently the two patched things up with her saying that he “could not have been nicer or more generous” when they met at last month’s Turning Point Action Conference in Florida where they both spoke.
“I appreciate you bringing up Chris Christie. He has said a lot of horrible things about President Trump over the course of the past few years. This is simply a response to that,” Hunt said.
A video clip of Christie reacting to Trump’s rude comments was then played with him boasting that he’s in second place in New Hampshire, which he also did during a Wednesday Fox News interview, citing two unnamed polls.
“He has been running his mouth for the past few years against President Trump and President Trump is simply fighting back. That’s who President Trump is. He is a fighter,” Hunt said as he reacted to the clip. “And trust me, if you punch him, he’s gonna punch back twice as hard.”
“I know what you’re saying. I don’t think there’s one heavyset Trump supporter who actually is going to be offended thinking, ‘Oh he must think I’m a fat pig.’ Like he’s using these very derogatory terms to insult somebody who he can’t stand. Trump’s admitted that he himself has got a bit of a weight problem in the past,” Kelly added.
