DeSantis says J6 Capitol chaos was ‘not an insurrection’ which is ‘something that the media had spun up’

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis rattled cages for stating that the chaos at the Capitol on January 6, 2021, was “not an insurrection” as the protest over the 2020 election that went badly off the rails has been portrayed by Democrats and their stooges in the media.

The Sunshine State Republican appeared on Friday’s edition of Russell Brand’s podcast where he engaged in a wide-ranging conversation with the British comic and commentator on topics including his keeping Florida free during the COVID pandemic, the war in Ukraine, and his war on “woke” leftist culture. At one point, the day that gave the Democrats a license to weaponize the federal government against their political enemies came up.

Brand posed the question to the governor on whether he considered those who showed up for the protest that spun badly out of control to be “insurrectionists as described” or “protesters” and asked for his take on the massive infusion of funding for the Capitol Police after J6 and “how the Democrat Party, in particular, has used these events to enact more power and to control media spaces.”

After expressing his opinion on the “ridiculous” amount of money given to the Capitol police, DeSantis stated, “It was not an insurrection.”

“These are people that were there to attend a rally and then they were there to protest. Now, it devolved, and it devolved into a riot,” he added. “But the idea that this was a plan to somehow overthrow the government of the United States is not true, and it’s something that the media had spun up just to try to basically, you know, get as much mileage out of it and use it for partisan and for political aims.”

“And so I know there were a lot of people that were there who were just there, and they didn’t have any designs on doing anything and so we just have to be honest about it,” DeSantis continued. “If somebody is honestly doing an insurrection against the U.S. government, then prove that that’s the case, and I’d be happy to accept it. But all you’re showing me is that there are a lot of protesters there. And it ended up devolving, you know, in ways that was unfortunate, of course, but to say that they were seditionists is just wrong.”

Other than former President Donald J. Trump who is about to be legally lynched by Special Counsel Jack Smith and a D.C. judge over J6, DeSantis is only the second GOP hopeful to break with the narrative of “the insurrection” as Vivek Ramaswamy did during an interview with Tucker Carlson at last week’s FAMiLY Leadership Summit in Iowa.

“You tell people in this country they cannot speak, that is when they scream. You tell people they cannot scream, that is when they tear things down,” Ramaswamy, said, opining that censorship and repression is what caused J6.

“Think about this,” he said, “you were told you had to be locked down, had to take a vaccine that was mandated and forced down your throat, stay locked down in your home while Antifa and BLM roamed and burned the streets of this country.”

“So that’s the leadup of one full year of telling people you have to shut up, sit down, and do as you’re told, and then you tell them, okay, there’s an election where you didn’t get the information that you needed, such as the Hunter Biden laptop story being real and suppressed — that’s what caused January 6th,” Ramaswamy stated.
