Tapper presses newly minted leftist hero Chris Christie on failed 2016 run

CNN host Jake Tapper prodded the new hero of the left, Chris Christie, concerning his failed 2016 run against former President Trump when he was brutally defeated in the primary, asking him why he thought this time around would be different.

Christie threw his hat in the ring on Tuesday and enthusiastically began tearing into a man he once called his friend, branding him a “mirror hog.” He joined a growing field of contenders for the GOP presidential nomination where Trump is far and away in the lead. His closest competitor is Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-Fla.) who trails the former president by about 30 points currently. Christie is a long, long shot and is in single digits in the race.

Christie sat down with Tapper on Wednesday during “The Lead” and attempted to explain why he faceplanted in 2016.

“Now, right now you’re polling in the low single digits,” Tapper told Christie. “I know you haven’t even been in the race for a day. But in 2016, you ran, you placed 10th in Iowa and sixth in New Hampshire before getting out of the race. What is going to make this year different?”

“The whole atmosphere is different, Jake,” Christie justified. “In 2015 and 2016 we had a situation where Donald Trump had no record to speak of. He had been on a TV show, had been a developer – private developer in New York. There was no way to really make the case against him.”

Christie proclaimed this time is “different.”

“This is different today,” he asserted. “We know he said he would build a wall across the entire border of Mexico. He didn’t do it. About a quarter of the wall was built. He said Mexico would pay for it. We haven’t gotten our first peso.”

“Turns out I was wrong. I couldn’t make him a better candidate and I couldn’t make him a better president, and he disappointed me,” Christie also told Tapper.

The former New Jersey governor pointed to Trump’s failure to eliminate Obamacare, balance the federal budget, and nix the national debt.

“On promises both big and small, he broke them,” Christie claimed. “He disappointed our party. He disappointed the country. And that’s gonna be the focus of this campaign.”

Apparently, Trump’s digs at Christie’s weight hit home, prompting a bitter response from him. Christie called Trump a “spoiled baby” in response to a video the former president posted.

“I think character is destiny for this country, and we’ve got to make a decision about what the character of the person should be who sits behind the desk in the Oval Office,” he claimed. “And if they’re going to do that kind of stuff. I mean, it … it’s so childish. It’s so juvenile. He is such a spoiled baby.”

Along with the video, Trump slammed Christie’s speech launching his 2024 campaign, snarking, “How many times did Chris Christie use the word SMALL? Does he have a psychological problem with SIZE? Actually, his speech was SMALL, and not very good. It rambled all over the place, and nobody had a clue of what he was talking about. Hard to watch, boring, but that’s what you get from a failed Governor (New Jersey) who left office with a 7% approval rating and then got run out of New Hampshire. This time, it won’t be any different!”

“When I saw it, Jake,” Christie said, “it just renewed in my own mind what a child he is. He’s a baby.”

“Whenever you want to criticize him in any way, that’s the way he responds. And you and I are both lucky enough to be parents. And if we had a child who conducted themselves like that, we’d send them to their room, not to the White House,” he viciously claimed. “It’s so childish. It’s so juvenile. He is such a spoiled baby. Beyond that, what can you even say about something like that, that’s that ridiculous?

Christie also tweeted, “If we want to break news here today, I have struggled with my weight for about 20 years, like tens of millions of Americans.”

Christie’s entry into the presidential race will most likely fall flat and not impact Trump much at all. But the growing candidate field could dilute DeSantis’ chances of unseating the former president as the nominee.
