Majority of Republicans support pardons for Jan 6 offenders as rally participants are STILL being arrested

A new poll has found that a majority of Republican voters support pardons being granted to those convicted of participating in the Jan. 6th riot at the U.S. Capitol.

Conducted by TIPP on behalf of the Daily Mail, the poll specifically found that 54 percent of GOP voters support a pardon for Jan. 6th rioters.

Among all voters, on the other hand, a 57 percent majority oppose the idea, while a 34 percent minority support it.

This poll comes roughly a month after former President Donald Trump promised to pardon a “large portion” of Jan. 6th defendants if reelected to office.

“I am inclined to pardon many of them. I can’t say for every single one, because a couple of them, probably they got out of control,” he said at a CNN town hall.

A couple of weeks later in late May, presidential candidate Ron DeSantis, the current governor of Florida, said he’s also considering pardoning Jan. 6th defendants.

“On day one, I will have folks that will get together and look at all these cases, who people are victims of weaponization or political targeting, and we will be aggressive in issuing pardons,” he said on “The Clay Travis & Buck Sexton Show.”

“I would say any example of disfavored treatment based on politics, or weaponization would be included in that review, no matter how small or how big,” he added.

Following DeSantis’ remarks, disgraced former FBI Director James Comey  slammed him for perpetrating “an attack on the rule of law.”

“It’s disgusting. It’s an attack on the rule of law. If anything in this country people should be able to agree on, we should send a message, never again. You can’t intervene by force,” he said during a CNN appearance.

“You can protest, you can march, you can do what you want, but don’t you dare. That’s the message that has to be sent with those prosecutions. And the idea of undercutting that message makes no sense at all,” he added.

The poll also comes roughly a month after the Department of Justice said over 1,030 people have been charged in relation to the Jan. 6th riot and around 570 of them have pleaded guilty.

“Over 900 defendants have been charged with entering or remaining in a restricted federal building or grounds, including 103 who face charges for entering a restricted area with a dangerous or deadly weapon,” as reported by Axios, and “346 have been charged with assaulting, resisting or impeding officers or employees, including 108 who face charges for using a deadly or dangerous weapon or causing serious bodily injury to an officer.”

Meanwhile, 309 “have been charged with corruptly obstructing, influencing, or impeding an official proceeding, or attempting to do so,” and 55 “have been charged with conspiracy, including conspiracy to obstruct a congressional proceeding, conspiracy to obstruct law enforcement during a civil disorder, conspiracy to injure an officer or some combination of the three.”

Regarding pleas, 149 defendants pleaded guilty to felonies,  421 pleaded guilty to misdemeanors, 78 were found guilty at “contested trials,” and 16 “have been convicted following an “agreed-upon set of facts,” per Axios.

The longest sentences have been reserved for those Jan. 6th rioters who were linked with the Oath Keepers militia.

“The founder of the far-right Oath Keepers has been sentenced to 18 years in federal prison in connection with the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol following his conviction on seditious conspiracy,” NBC News reported on May 25th.

The Daily Mail poll also comes the same week that Hollywood actor Jay Johnston was arrested as per his own role in the Jan. 6th riot.

“According to court documents, Johnston, 54, allegedly helped pour water on the faces of rioters who had been pepper sprayed by law enforcement and was seen carrying a stolen shield that belonged to U.S. Capitol Police. The documents, which reference video and photo footage, say Johnston participated with other rioters in trying to push law enforcement officials,” as reported by NPR.

“Several members of the crowd joined together to push against police in a concerted movement. Johnston participated in this concerted movement and pushed along with other rioters for several seconds,” the documents state.

The FBI also obtained a text message from Johnston in which he acknowledged being at the riot.

“The news has presented it as an attack. It actually wasn’t. Thought it kind of turned into that. It was a mess. Got maced and tear gassed and I found it quite untastic,” the text reportedly reads.

“Airline records also show that Johnston reserved a flight that departed Los Angeles to Washington D.C. on January 4 and returned January 7,” NPR further notes.
