Trump comments on possibility of Ron DeSantis being his VP pick in 2024

The animosity between Team Trump and Team DeSantis is pretty bitter at times, a sad display that doesn’t even spare the wife of Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis despite the fact that Casey DeSantis is a mother to three small children and just endured the battle of her life in successfully fighting breast cancer.

Former President Donald Trump and DeSantis hold great promise in the eyes of many on the right, and there are some holding out for a dream ticket of Trump/DeSantis… or DeSantis/Trump. Not that it’s a viable option given that the 12th Amendment stands in the way — titled “Electing the President and Vice President,” the amendment says “one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves.”

Well, Trump addressed that possibility Monday during an episode of the Todd Starnes Show, suggesting the odds were much better before DeSantis threw his hat into the 2024 Republican presidential primary — an act the former president insists is disloyal to him.

“I was very surprised that he did,” Trump told Starnes. “Without that, it would have been a distinct possibility.”

As for where Trump now stands, he added, “I don’t like saying anything is like, impossible, but it’s pretty unlikely I would think.”

“Look, Rob DeSanctimonious came to me asking for help. He was losing badly, by 31 points, to popular Agriculture Commissioner Adam Putnam,” Trump said last month in a Truth Social post. “He was getting ready to drop out of the race – Ran a terrible campaign! Ron told me he had one last chance, my Support & Endorsement, which Putnam, and everyone else, wanted also. I gave it to Ron, and the race was over.

“In one day, he went from losing badly, to winning by a lot. With 3 LARGE TRUMP RALLIES, he WON THE GENERAL ELECTION in an upset. DISLOYAL!!!”

Interestingly, Trump has chosen the governor’s performance during the pandemic as a point of attack, contorting himself to praise disgraced former New York Gov. Andrew Cuomo over DeSantis, who is widely seen as one of the few elected officials who got it right when it comes to the coronavirus. With criticism like that, it would be hard for Trump to double back and try to align with his strongest rival.

DeSantis has tried to take the high road, but recently slammed Trump for his “petty” behavior and ruled out getting “in the gutter” with his opponent.

“I think it’s so petty,” the governor said. “I think it’s so juvenile. I don’t think that’s what voters want and honestly, I think that his conduct, which he’s been doing for years now, I think that’s one of the reasons he’s not in the White House now.”

“I think he alienated too many voters for things that really don’t matter. So I don’t get in the gutter on any of that,” DeSantis added.
