Los Angeles school district votes to back LGBTQ lessons in schools following parent protests

The Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) unanimously voted on Tuesday to adopt a resolution which encourages schools to adopt lessons on gender identity and sexual orientation, just days after parents protested the proposed materials.

The district’s adopted resolution “encourages all schools to incorporate lessons on the LGBTQ+ community in instruction” and recognizes June as LGBTQ+ Pride Month and October as LGBTQ+ History Month. On Friday, parents of students from Saticoy Elementary School within LAUSD pushed back against a Pride event that showed a video to children explaining that “some kids have two mommies, some kids have two daddies.”

“Every school district, including ours, must continue to take a stand in supporting our LGBTQ+ youth and ensuring that every student has the resources they need to thrive both academically and socio-emotionally as a valued member of their school community,” the resolution stated.

Under the resolution, schools are encouraged to use the district’s “Queer All Year” calendar which first appeared in the 2020-2021 school year. The resolution also recognizes Oct. 11 as National Coming Out Day, Nov. 20 as Transgender Day of Remembrance, March 31 as Transgender Day of Visibility and April 12 as a Day of Silence as a way to “honor the contributions of the LGBTQ+ community.”

Saticoy Elementary School parents protested the Pride event, showing up outside of the school holding signs that read “parental choice matters” and “stop grooming our kids.” The parents that protested the assembly advocated for others to keep their kids home through an Instagram account they created.

“I didn’t bring them into this world for a teacher to explain [to] them what is gay — or what two men or two women do,” a parent protesting the event told ABC News. “Some certain things should be left to the parents to decide whether they want their kids to be exposed to it or not — at least at a certain age.”

LAUSD referred the Daily Caller News Foundation to its press release when asked for comment.
