FDNY denies getting memo ordering city firehouses to house migrants: ‘This is categorically false’

The FDNY is debunking a fake memo that circulated on Tuesday claiming that officers were being ordered to provide illegal immigrants with door codes to their living quarters so they could be housed in New York City firehouses.

This comes after Mayor Eric Adams suggested the city could pay homeowners to open up their homes to asylum seekers due to a lack of space to house them in the Big Apple.

The  New York City Fire Department was slammed with queries after the now-debunked memo started circulating. It asserted that an “emergency effort” was being conducted to place migrants in fire stations as soon as Wednesday, according to the Daily Mail.

“Tuesday night, a letter appearing to be an official FDNY internal document was circulated, purporting that firehouses will be used to house migrants,” FDNY press secretary Amanda Farinacci announced via a statement. “This is categorically false. The document is a fake, and there will be no firehouses used to house migrants.”

The memo was dated June 6. It indicated that Adams had issued an order and that the “Commanding Officer of each firehouse will immediately contact their Battalion and notify them of the amount of beds they have available for migrants seeking asylum.”

The fake order also intimated that officers would have to turn over door codes to illegal immigrants which immediately triggered outrage on social media where the fake memo quickly spread. Many fell for the false directive. Understandably so, considering Chicago police stations are evidently housing illegal immigrants.

The memo claimed to have originated from the FDNY Chief of Fire Operations, John Esposito. That is not the case.

Esposito has been with the FDNY since 1991. He was originally assigned to Engine Company 324 in Queens. Over a 30-year period, he rose through the ranks to become Chief of Fire Operations in July 2022. He attempted to step down in February after Commissioner Laura Kavanagh demoted three chiefs in June which roiled the FDNY’s ranks, according to NBC New York.

The FDNY memo hoax surfaced after hundreds of illegal immigrants lined up outside of the Jacob K. Javits Federal Building in lower Manhattan.

Adams has been coming up with bizarre and desperate suggestions for housing illegal immigrants being bused to New York City. It’s estimated that approximately 72,000 have arrived since last spring. He’s even claiming that his official residence, Gracie Mansion, is being considered to house migrants.

“I was speaking with the staff to see if I could put a few families into Gracie Mansion,” Adams claimed at a press conference on the Upper West Side, according to the New York Daily News. “I don’t have a problem if I can put a migrant family in Gracie Mansion because I want to lead from the front. That’s the type of leader I am.”

Following that piece of grandstanding, Adams said that he would have to review “legal protocols” before moving illegal immigrants into the mayor’s mansion in Brooklyn.

“You know, I can’t use the building any way I want,” he stated and then said that he would not ask New Yorkers to do anything he wouldn’t do personally.

“Generals don’t send their troops into battle and ask, ‘How’s the war?’ They lead troops into battle. I’m a general who leads my troops into battle. So yes, I’m more than willing to use whatever space I have to deal with this crisis,” he delusionally put forth.

The mayor has previously proclaimed that he wants Gracie Mansion to be “the people’s house.” He has hosted at least three weddings there and the main floor is open to the public for limited guided tours. Only visiting officials and the mayor’s family are allowed to live in the mansion which means that illegal immigrants could be barred from residing there.

Monday, Adams announced that churches, mosques, and other houses of worship would shelter illegal immigrants. He contended that when the church-based program is fully up and running, they hope to be able to host up to 1,000 illegal immigrants at a time.
