Woman accused of killing mother, enlists daughter’s help in ghoulish disposal of body’s remains

A Landover, Maryland woman allegedly murdered her 71-year-old mother and then got her daughter to help dismember her with a chainsaw and attempt to dispose of the remains by firing up a charcoal grill and burning the body parts.

They were caught and arrested when police conducted a wellness check on Friday and smelled the decomposing remains in the basement, according to the Daily Mail.

Candace Craig, 44, is being charged with first and second-degree murder after killing her mother Margaret Craig. Her 19-year-old daughter Salia Hardy will also face charges for being an accessory after the fact for helping her mother dispose of the body, according to Prince George’s County Police.

According to police, Craig murdered her mother on May 23 after a fight. She then enlisted the help of her daughter to dispose of the body. The remains were evidently kept in a blue bin in the mother’s bedroom.

Police responded to the family home in the 200 block of Hill Road at approximately 1:35 pm on Friday after getting a 911 call from an unidentified person claiming that they had not heard from Margaret Craig in several days and were worried about her.

Candace Craig reportedly answered the door and let the police in who proceeded to search the home. When they got to the basement, they “recognized the smell of putrefaction and observed blood and tissue on the floor near three white plastic trash bags.” Their homicide unit then took over the investigation.

Court documents also state that police found a knife on the basement floor, a chainsaw, cutting utensils, cleaning materials scattered around, and found blood spattered throughout the basement.

The motive for the murder is still under investigation according to a press release. However, court documents indicate that the victim had threatened to report her daughter to the police for fraudulently using her credit card.

“Defendant 2 [Salia Hardy] stated that the Defendant threatened to report her daughter, Defendant 1 [Candace Craig], to the police for fraudulent use of her credit card. Defendant 1 then attacked the Decedent,” court documents contend.

Ironically, the murder took place just nine days after Mother’s Day. In 2021, Craig posted a loving message for her mother on Facebook.

“Happy Mother’s Day to the number one woman in my life. I hope you have an awesome and peaceful day. I don’t get to say this everyday but I love you very much to the moon and back,” she wrote, according to the Daily Mail.

“The detectives of the Homicide Unit will ensure a thorough investigation is conducted and that both suspects are held accountable for their cruel and criminal behavior,” Major David Blazer, who is the commander of the major crimes division in Prince George’s County, proclaimed in a statement.

The chief medical examiner’s office will confirm the victim’s identity and conduct an investigation into the cause of death.

A preliminary hearing for Candace Craig is scheduled for July 3. She is currently being held without bond.
