‘The View’ co-host who lectured Tim Scott on racism misses his appearance on show

“The View” co-host Joy Behar was not on the show’s panel on the day that Republican Sen. Tim Scott of South Carolina, a presidential candidate, was scheduled to appear.

Co-hosts Whoopi Goldberg, Sara Haines, Ana Navarro, Sunni Hostin and Alyssa Farah Griffin walked out at the start of the show Monday. Behar lectured Scott and Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas, both prominent black conservatives, about racism on the May 23 airing of “The View,” drawing criticism from Republican Rep. Byron Donalds of Florida.

“He’s one of these guys, who you know, like Clarence Thomas, a black Republican, who believes in ‘pull yourself up by your bootstraps,’ rather than to me, understanding the systemic racism that African Americans face in this country and other minorities,” Behar said May 23. “He doesn’t get it. Neither does Clarence. And that’s why they’re Republicans.”

Scott expressed his desire to confront Behar over the comments in person during a fundraising event hosted by Republican Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa in Des Moines.

“When I think about hogwash it makes me think about The View. Does anybody watch The View on TV?” Scott asked the crowd at the Ride and Roast, who booed in response to the ABC show. “Good, I am in the right place. I am going on ‘The View’ on Monday. Because I think it is time for a conservative with a backbone to look those ladies in the eyes and say, ‘You do not have to be an exception to succeed in America. You can be the rule and succeed in America.’”

Scott and Thomas, who are black, also have faced attacks for being conservative. After Scott gave the response to President Joe Biden’s 2021 address to Congress, he was subject racist attacks, including the phrase “Uncle Tim” that Twitter allowed to trend.

Scott took aim at Goldberg after she said he had “Clarence Thomas Syndrome.”

“The radical left is quaking in their boots because when they see an African American conservative who believes in the future of this nation, stands up to be counted, they push back. That’s a good sign. We’re on the right message,” Scott told Fox News host Harris Faulkner May 23.
