A panic-stricken mother stumbled into a Beverly Hills gas station with her choking toddler in her arms and thrust the child into the arms of a security guard as she collapsed on the ground believing the child was about to die.

Two Los Angeles security guards, Niko Nesbeth, a Marine veteran who served eight years, and his partner Joey Madrigal, are being called heroes after they quickly stepped in to save the life of the baby who was turning blue, according to the Daily Mail.

The incident occurred at a 76 gas station on the corner of Santa Monica Boulevard and Crescent Drive on May 26 at 11:30 am.

Someone ran into the minimart to grab water for the child and told the attendants that a mother desperately needed help. The distraught mother can be seen on surveillance camera footage shouting, “Who’s a doctor?”

Nesbeth ran out to the woman while Madrigal radioed for medics. The mom thrust the child into Nesbeth’s arms and then collapsed on the tarmac in hysterics. The security guard knew the child was in distress immediately and proceeded to turn the child over and pat it on the back. The toddler started breathing again and appeared unharmed.

“She was very devastated,” Jose Peraza, an attendant at the gas station who helped console the mother, commented to KTLA. “He was dying, not breathing or anything. So, a couple of security guards, they helped her out. My partner told the security guard to hit the little baby on the back.”

“The mother already throws the baby into my arms,” Nesbeth recounted. “I notice looking at the baby’s face the baby was turning blue. I could tell his colors were changing so I knew he was choking and wasn’t getting air.”

Madrigal had just recently joined Covered 6 Security which offers tactical training. He said that he knew they had to get professional medical help right away.

“One thing I’ve learned through training is that you’ve got to slow down time; and you’ve got to realize and just get all the facts and put it all together – because I was pretty much in charge of getting the rescue as fast as possible,” he remarked.

Madrigal was able to contact the paramedics through a direct line that Covered 6’s offices have with police specifically for instances like this one. They arrived within minutes of the call.

Nesbeth was relieved that he could help the child and called his being in the right place at the right time “divine intervention.”

“It was the best feeling to feel that way,” he told Fox 11 after the incident. “To assist a community – especially a little child – that’s amazing.”

Private security forces such as Covered 6 Security are common on the streets of Beverly Hills these days due to the skyrocketing crime rate in Los Angeles. The firm was contracted to patrol the neighborhood in December 2021. The company works in conjunction with the Beverly Hills Police Department.
