Rep. Chip Roy finds it hard to choke down Biden-McCarthy ‘turd-sandwich’ debt ceiling deal

Republican Speaker of the House Kevin McCarthy took a victory lap on Sunday morning after reaching a tentative deal with President Joe Biden over the debt ceiling that will avoid a default, but his big win wasn’t celebrated by many conservative lawmakers including Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) who tossed out some colorful terms to describe what many feel was a feckless sellout.

The GOP leader appeared on “Fox News Sunday” where he tooted his own horn over the tentative agreement with the dug-in Biden that he claimed that an overwhelming “more than 95 percent of all those in the conference were very excited” about in referring to Republicans and that there isn’t “one thing in the bill for Democrats,” words that the Lone Star State congressman found hard to choke down.

Roy tweeted, “1st – the leadership playbook is to line up cheerleading on phone calls to demonstrate ‘unity.’ 2nd, not 95% – I know of more no’s than that already. 3rd – they haven’t been educated yet on what a turd-sandwich this ‘deal’ is. They will be.”

McCarthy was referring to a Saturday tweet from Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) who ripped “RINOs congratulating McCarthy for getting almost zippo” as making him want to throw up.

Roy also called for House Republicans to reject McCarthy’s bill and the surrender of any “leverage” over forcing action on the border crisis.

“If you want the border to be secure – no member of the @HouseGOP can vote for this #debtceiling ‘deal’ because it will remove all leverage we have to force action on the border,” he tweeted.

Another Texas Republican, Senator Ted Cruz also wasn’t down with McCarthy’s Fox News turd polishing.

“He’s right. There’s not ‘one thing’ for Dems. There are $4 trillion things—a blank check—for Democrats,” Cruz tweeted on Sunday.

“Plus 87,000 things: new IRS agents to harass Americans,” he added. “All in exchange for eliminating virtually ALL of the House’s spending cuts.”

Later on Sunday, Rep. Roy reacted to a report that it’s possible that the bill could get unanimous Democrat support, “Just one big happy uniparty family!! Yay, debt!!”

“I think there are even some worse components – but waiting on text… it’s worse than I thought every minute that goes by,” Roy added in still another tweet.

He’s hardly the only Republican to speak out at what is perceived as a bum deal as the grousing about McCarthy will almost certainly continue for at least the next few days.
