As Republicans verge on revolt over the debt ceiling deal House Speaker Kevin McCarthy struck with President Joe Biden, the California Representative isn’t concerning himself with the threat of a motion to vacate.
As American Wire News reported, McCarthy had to make a series of concessions to GOP members in order to take possession of the gavel, and, after an unprecedented 15 votes, one of those “last ditch” agreements was a change to a congressional rule that lowered the threshold required for a motion to vacate the chair.
Following a debt ceiling deal that has many claiming McCarthy “caved” to the Biden administration, many are now calling for that concession to be invoked.
This is a horrible debt ceiling deal.
No limit to the debt now, sets the time at January 2025 for unlimited debt going into a recession.
Minimum $4 trillion new debt to around $36 trillion in early 2025.
Vacate the Speaker PLEASE @mattgaetz @chiproytx @RepDanBishop

Asked at a press conference if the threat “worried” him, McCarthy responded, “Not at all.”
“We know at any time when you sit and negotiate within two parties that you gotta work with both sides of the aisle,” he said. “So, it’s not 100 percent of what everybody wants, but when you look, the country is going to be stronger. This is going to be transformational, where Congress is going to literally vote to spend less money this year than we spent last year.”

Not all of McCarthy’s Republican colleagues agree.
“This ‘deal’ is insanity,” tweeted Rep. Ralph Norman (R-S.C.). “A $4T debt ceiling increase with virtually no cuts is not what we agreed to.”
“Not gonna vote to bankrupt our country,” Norman tweeted. “The American people deserve better.”

“Of the $80 billion Democrats appropriated to the IRS over ten years, the ‘deal’ rescinds $1.9 billion,” said Rep. Dan Bishop (R-N.C.). “You read that right. That’s the kind of ‘get’ that’s so good McCarthy agreed to increase the debt ceiling $4 trillion.”
“I listened to Speaker McCarthy earlier tonight outline the deal with President Biden and I am appalled by the debt ceiling surrender,” Rep. Ken Buck (R-Colo.) said. “The bottom line is that the U.S. will have $35 trillion of debt in January, 2025. That is completely unacceptable.”

Unfazed, McCarthy went on Fox News’s “Fox News Sunday” for a victory lap.
“Maybe it doesn’t do everything for everyone, but this is a step in the right direction that no one thought that we would be able to today,” he told host Shannon Bream. “I’ll debate this bill with anybody. Is it everything I wanted? No, because we don’t control all of it. But it is the biggest rescission in history. It is the biggest cut Congress has ever voted for in that process.”
“We still have a lot of work to do, but I believe this is an agreement in principle that is worthy of the American people,” McCarthy stated.
