The NAACP’s latest political stunt in service to the Democratic Party was to target Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis (R), but the organization didn’t put a lot of thought into its chosen line of attack and was left with serious egg on its face.
In an attempt to gin up racial enmity toward America’s Governor, the NAACP issued a travel advisory that claimed Florida “is openly hostile toward African Americans.”
“Florida is openly hostile toward African Americans, people of color and LGBTQ+ individuals. Before traveling to Florida, please understand that the state of Florida devalues and marginalizes the contributions of, and the challenges faced by African Americans and other communities of color,” a release from the civil rights organization declared.
The problem here is that the NAACP underestimated Team DeSantis, which quickly countered to share an April 2021 photo of the board’s vice chair, Karen Boykin-Towns “chillin’ in Clearwater, FL.” But it gets even better, because the chairman of the Board of Directors of the NAACP, Leon Russell, LIVES in Florida — he is a resident of Tampa.
But will @NAACP tell DIRECTOR Leon W. Russell to leave Florida? He lives in Tampa @ChairmanNAACP -These people are absolute hypocrites AND liars. https://t.co/8OgbvsKIE0 pic.twitter.com/E3GjrLrZ7s

And on that note, Christian Ziegler, Chairman of the Florida Republican Party, offered to do Russell a solid. Since Russell supposedly lives in such a bad place, Ziegler hilariously offered to help him move!
“True leadership is being willing to do what you ask others to do… time to step up and MOVE. If you think our state is so bad, the @FloridaGOP will help with moving costs,” Ziegler tweeted.
The CHAIRMAN of the @NAACP lives in Tampa, FLORIDA!

It doesn’t get funnier than that — unless you are a member of the humorless Democratic tribe:
Telling people to just “move” — since most people lack the resources to pick up their lives and leave the state — that’s the arrogance of privilege.

Sounds like you are trying to marginalize him, just as their statement said. Perhaps you should actually read it rather than just reacting out loud.

In reality, as social media users noted, you just can’t make this stuff up… here’s a sampling of responses from those who can appreciate the humor at play here:
It’s almost like a Babylon Bee parody! Can’t make this stuff up.

I’m right across the bridge from Tampa, on the North Shore.. I can help him pack.

Uhaul prices are pretty dang cheap to move you to California. After so many have left CA for FL, they are desperate for people to move back to CA and bring the Uhauls with them!

This is ignorant or stupid. You are safer in Florida if black than you would be in Chicago. He’s just being difficult for attention. These are the people who give NAACP a bad rap. They’ve just become crackpots. https://t.co/rUI3OdOtsn
