‘Build the wall!’ Chicago residents tear into politicians, sue over plans to house illegal immigrants

Chicago residents are incensed and are suing after local politicians announced that they plan to house 250 to 500 illegal immigrants at a shuttered high school in their neighborhood, as Title 42 expires on the southern border and more migrants are shipped to the Windy City.

The city has been flooded with illegal immigrants and residents are fed up with it, according to Fox News. During a community meeting at South Shore International College Preparatory High School on May 4, local residents’ anger boiled over at the proposal of housing hundreds of illegal immigrants in an already struggling area. The meeting took place the same day that residents filed a lawsuit. A temporary injunction has been issued over the school. But that won’t stand for long.

“What’s important is that we really establish this is a humanitarian crisis, and we are here,” Chicago chief engagement officer Nubia William told an angry mob as she was jeered over the proposal.

“While this crisis may constitute an emergency for the city of Chicago, it does not constitute an emergency for the South Shore community,” Alderman Michelle A. Harris asserted.

“When it comes to the total number of people at South Shore at any given point in time, it is fluid,” another local leader attempted to tell the furious audience who started yelling in response. “We would start with 250-500.”

Residents shredded the politicians for not even bothering to tell them and give them a choice in the matter. It was not what the local leaders had expected and they were visibly shocked and maybe just a little afraid at the outbursts that followed the news.

“How could you do that without consulting us?” an angered resident responded.

I am concerned with safety in the area,” another bluntly told the local council.

Executive Director of Constitutional Policing Tina Stagg made an announcement that police will be stationed to oversee the illegal immigrants at the school 24 hours a day, according to ABC7.

“Those are exactly the kind of services South Side residents say they have begged for and been denied,” ABC7 noted.

City officials responded to critics by stating they have looked at more than 200 locations but many are in need of major repairs. The former South Shore High School has been occupied by the Chicago Police Department as a training center. Residents claimed that the neighborhood has pushed to have the building reserved for a community space.

One resident demanded that for “every homeless immigrant you bring in,” leaders should administer to “one of the homeless individuals in our community,” arguing, “I think that would be fair.”

WTTW News also covered the explosive meeting.

“Why would you do that without asking us about our input to the people who live right in front of the South Shore school? Two-hundred and fifty people, give me a break,” one local Chicago resident angrily stated.

“Where is the money coming from?” another person asked. “Migrants don’t pay taxes. I understand helping people, but you have to start with your own home. Why don’t we have those resources with what’s happening here?”

According to WTTW News, one person justifiably shouted, “Build the wall! Make a border! Put them on the North Side!”

Chicago has taken in 8,000 migrants since August, and more than 200 a day have flooded into the Windy City, crowding police stations and other public spaces, according to ABC7.
