Lee, 43, was responsible for the creation of the mobile payment system CashApp and, according to friends, had been the victim of a stabbing early Tuesday morning. Reports from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) indicated that the victim had been walking in the Rincon Hill neighborhood around 2:30 in the morning when the incident occurred.

“Officers arrived on scene and located a 43-year-old adult male victim suffering from apparent stab wounds,” the SFPD said in a release. “Officers rendered aid and summoned medics to the scene. The victim was transported to a local hospital with life-threatening injuries. Despite efforts by first responders and medical personnel, the victim succumbed to his injuries.”

Law enforcement had not disclosed the identity of Lee, but grieving friends issued statements of their own when they learned of the violent death. MobileCoin CEO Joshua Goldbard told ABC7, “Bob was a force of nature. Helped to birth Android and CashApp into our world.”

“Moby was his dream: a privacy-protecting wallet for the 21st Century. I will miss him every day,” Goldbard added. The two had worked together at MobileCoin where Lee had been the chief product officer since December 2021.

As mentioned, the tech executive had been influential in the development of the Android operating system having spent time at Google. He had also been chief technology officer for Square and was an investor in and adviser to companies like Beeper, Figma, Faire and Clubhouse as well as founder of the social network Present.

Other reactions to Lee’s death included that of former MMA fighter Jake Shields who first tweeted without identifying the victim, “I just found out my good friend was killed last night…He was in the ‘good’ part of the city and appeared to have been targeted in a random mugging/attack — F*ck San Francisco.”

Technologist Matt Ocko added to Shields’ thread, “Bob Lee was a friend to me & multiple people in my firm. My heart goes out to his loved ones. Chesa Boudin, & the criminal-loving city council that enabled him & a lawless SF for years, have Bob’s literal blood on their hands. Take action.”

Boudin was the former San Francisco district attorney whose soft-on-crime policies had led to his being recalled by voters.

Warning: Language

From the beginning of the year through April 2, there were 12 reported homicides throughout San Francisco compared to 10 during the same period the year prior. Robberies and assaults had also seen an increase by 13.6 and 2.2 percent respectively.

Updates from the SFPD have indicated that no arrests have been made in connection to Lee’s death, and details were not provided as to any persons of interest or suspects. Investigators are seeking tips from anyone who may have information related to the case.
