Maher warns his fellow libs Trump indictment could set precedent for ‘cycle of revenge’

During the latest episode of his HBO show, liberal comedian Bill Maher warned his fellow liberals about the risks inherent in indicting former President Donald Trump.

I always ask myself the question, what is actually better for the future of the country and my future? Because I don’t want to live in a country where we are one of these places where whoever is president, as soon as they get out of office, they go after them,” he said.

It’s very almost Greek-tragedy-like, because you set off this cycle of revenge like ‘The House of Atreus.’ And I guarantee you, when Biden is out of office, day two they will try to arrest him,” he added.

Many commentators on both the left and right have put forth the same theory of a cycle of revenge, including conservative radio show host Ben Shapiro:

Responding to Maher’s remarks, one of his guests, Virginia Lt. Gov. Winsome Sears, reminded him that America will make it through all this no matter what.

“Well, we’re not Greek. We’re Americans, and this is the American experiment that’s going to continue. It’s bigger than any one person. It’s bigger than a party. And, you know, this is the America that people are dying to get into,” she said.

“This is the America that had my father come in and allowed him to come in with only $1.75, and now he’s comfortably retired because he took any job he could find and got a good education with that. So I have hope for America, because where else are we going to run to? There’s no place else like America,” she added.

A bit surprised by Sears’ non-sequitur, Maher then asked her to “specifically” address Trump’s indictment. She responded by essentially repeating his earlier point about a cycle of revenge, but in a different way.

“Well, here’s what I’m saying: Everybody deserves due process. We don’t even know what the charges are. Do you know what they are? I hear that there are 30 of them. Now everyone’s speculating,” she said.

What I’m saying is I think, like my grandmother said, be careful that you don’t dance on the grave of your enemy, because you may fall in. So let’s just wait and see what plays out,” she added.

Listen to some of what she said below:

Maher’s second guest, Tablet magazine columnist James Kirchick, then cut in to drop a very salient point about Trump’s indictment.

“I think the tragic part of this is that there are three other investigations going on right now, all of them far more serious than paying off a porn star: The investigation into January 6th and his potential responsibility for that, the investigation into the documents he pilfered, and the investigation into him trying to swing the election in Georgia where there’s a audio phone recording of him,” he said.

“So if you’re going to indict the first president ever in the history of this country for something … why couldn’t it have been for one of these other investigations, rather than this new one which is going on a novel legal theory that the D.A in Manhattan has. It’s unclear if he’ll even be able to get a conviction,” Kirchick added.

Sears then cut in to note that she agrees with this point. And to really further prove the point, she drew attention to an editorial from The Washington Post’s board.

“The Washington Post editorial board, which is no friend of Republicans, has said that this is a very flimsy charge and it may not hold up, because John Edwards was actually charged pretty similar to this, and he was acquitted on one of the counts, and a hung jury on the rest, because they, the jury, accepted that he was not really campaign donating as much as he was trying to hide the affair from his wife,” she said.

All this is why Maher had, a week earlier, encouraged Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg to NOT move forward with his plans to indict Trump.

“Yes, he’s done a lot of bad things, and I’m sure he did this — everything they accused him of [doing], he did. But first of all, it’s not gonna work. It’s gonna be rocket fuel for his 2024 campaign. And it’s just gonna look to MAGA nation like, ‘Oh, you know, you tried with Mueller, you tried with Ukraine, you tried with January 6. Now we go to the porn star? Really? You’re down to that?!” he said.

Yes, they’re down to that …
