HBO host Bill Maher sat down with businesswoman Arianna Huffington on Sunday during his “Club Random Podcast” and broached the subject of “bulldozer parents” who tend to instill in their children a sense of fragility instead of forcing them to be made of “sterner stuff.”
Maher and Huffington discussed the case of a girl committing suicide after being bullied online, something that seems to be happening more and more these days. He had sympathy for the tragedy but he also noted that parents are not doing their job and are, instead, causing their children to be weak and broken.

“I think in general parents do a sh*t job these days of instilling in their kids a sense of ‘you need to be made of sterner stuff.’ You know, just in general, a general note. That’s never what they teach kids. It’s just like, how can we bulldoze, they call them bulldozer parents, how can we bulldoze all obstacles away from you before you get there,” Maher commented.
The HBO host did highlight the fact that social media can be very destructive and said it “could have driven [him] to suicide” when he was young and impressionable.
“Because at least in school if you were bullied, you could go home, and you could shut that off. Here, you get no break. The phone follows you everywhere, and it follows you forever in life,” Maher asserted.
He addressed the issue that posts and pictures that occurred when someone was “young and dumb” could haunt them for the rest of their life and come back to bite them in a myriad of ways.
“With the phone following you, and then you know if you tweet it, and they’ll go back to eighth grade to get people,” Maher remarked.
He definitely has a point because past posts and pictures have cost people jobs and their reputations. In many cases, you can’t just start over with a clean slate because your past is on the internet which is forever.
Maher has used his HBO show “Real Time with Bill Maher” many times to slam “cancel culture,” ticking off leftists in general.
“Does everything have to be a summary execution in America? What happened to just accepting the apology? Oh OK, you made a mistake as humans do. I mean, could we get on with our lives?” Maher said in 2021 on HBO.
One example of his critique on “cancel culture” involved the former banjoist of Mumford and Sons, Winston Marshall, who was caught up in leftists attempting to cancel him after he praised conservative Andy Ngo’s book on Antifa. That incident led to him quitting the band and having to rethink his entire life all over an opinion that the left did not like.

Huffington was in full agreement with Maher’s sentiment on the issue. However, she claimed to be more “optimistic” about the future.
“I think it’s changing lately, you know, the idea that we’re going to be judged by the worst thing in our lives, especially this whole idea of the content collapse, that it doesn’t matter what else you’ve done, you’re going to be judged by this as though this was the first thing you’ve done on the subject. That for me is the worst. It’s actually fundamentally against everything that civilization is about which is progressing, growing, becoming better. The idea now is like this frozen idea, arrested development,” she stated.
