Dennis Quaid documentary exposes the often overlooked dangers of electric grid failure

Actor Dennis Quaid has released a bone-chilling documentary that points to the devastating after-effects of a nationwide power grid failure such as starvation, homelessness, violence, and death that would occur in a downward spiral that could send the US “back to the 1880s.”

Experts have been warning for decades how easy it would be to take out the power grid with an electromagnetic device (EMP) that is exploded at a high altitude. That is one of the reasons that so many were concerned about the Chinese spy balloon. A cyberattack could also take down the grid. So could a planned attack by terrorists or a massive solar flare.

The documentary echoes concerns written in the excellent series of books by John Matherson on the subject, beginning with “One Second After.”

Quaid spoke with Fox News host Jesse Watters concerning the documentary which, evidently, scared the crap out of Watters. The segment played clips of the film while Quaid explained how the power grid has been overlooked in terms of its sensitivity and importance to daily life. Things like life-saving medications would be cut off, water would become unavailable in many places, food would stop being delivered to stores, and heat and air-conditioning would halt.

“Heat, gas for our cars, transportation for food-restocking — all of it relies to some extent on electricity. But no one likes to focus on what could happen if it all suddenly is taken away,” Quaid pointed out in his narration.

The actor made note of the fact that power substations have already been attacked numerous times in the US… one just last month. One recent attack was planned by two suspects who plotted sequential attacks on Baltimore-area substations they hoped would grind the city to a halt.

“This is not ‘The Day After Tomorrow,’ by the way. This is tomorrow,” Quaid solemnly told Watters. “I think it could happen, and it’s a problem that we can fix.”

He brought up one of the biggest power outages in US history that occurred when tree limbs made contact with wires in Ohio in 2003 causing New York and a number of other states as well as parts of Canada to go dark for multiple days.

“That was just a small little event, but a GMT event — a bad actor could take it out through a Chinese balloon, for all we know…” Quaid noted. “It could be up to, like, 30 days, but what we’re talking about is like a nuclear explosion up in space.”

If we experienced a catastrophic outage triggered by an EMP attack or from space, we might be down 30 days or much, much longer than that. Quaid warned that “it would take us back to 1880, and you wouldn’t be able to get gas, you wouldn’t be able to get food.”

No one seems to want to foot the bill to harden the grid. The actor charged that the utility companies don’t want to pay for upgrading the grid because it will cost billions to do so. But it could be budgeted by the federal government which inexplicably seems to have little to no appetite for doing so. Hardening the power grid is a national security issue.

“This is something that if it does happen, it’s going to make COVID look like a kids’ show,” Quaid remarked.
