Yet another American corporation is fleeing Portland, Oregon, a Democrat-run city that many see as a leftist hellhole beset with crime, homelessness, and rampant drug use.
Cracker Barrel, a restaurant and gift store chain that serves Southern-style food, announced last week that it was closing its three remaining stores in Portland, according to Fox Business. The move comes on the heels of Walmart announcing its departure from the city due to financial reasons — a decision that came after Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said theft was “higher than what it has historically been,” stressing that “stores will close” if authorities don’t get serious about prosecuting shoplifting crimes.
With more than 600 locations nationwide, Cracker Barrel pointed to the COVID-19 pandemic as the driving factor in its decision to close the locations.
The company said in a statement: “As a standard course of business, we continually evaluate the performance of our stores, using various criteria to ensure we are meeting the needs of our guests and our business.”
“With that, we are saddened that we have been unable to overcome the impact the pandemic had on our business and have made the difficult decision to close the Beaverton, Tualatin, and Bend locations on March 20,” the release added. “The decision to close a store is never one we take lightly, and our focus right now is in assisting our impacted employees during this transition.”
A Cracker Barrel spokesperson reaffirmed in a statement to Fox Business that post-pandemic struggles prompted the decision.
“Like so many other companies, the pandemic impacted our business, and we have struggled to staff and profitably run these stores. Despite the extra efforts made, we couldn’t viably continue to keep our doors open,” the spokesperson said.
A Nike store in northeast Portland abruptly closed in November after a string of brazen shoplifting incidents, Fox Business reported.
And a Daily Mail article earlier this month suggested that this is a serious trend.
“Business owners are fleeing Portland in droves amid a pronounced rise in crime and homelessness, officials in the Democratic stronghold have revealed,” the British newspaper reported. “Public data shows that since the pandemic, more than 2,600 downtown businesses have filed changes of address with the U.S. Postal Service to leave their downtown ZIP codes.”
