Actress Brooke Shields made a stunning admission about her ex Andre Agassi’s supposed “petulant behavior” after watching her film an episode of “Friends” that she said led to the destruction of all his trophies.
With the release of her new documentary “Pretty Baby: Brooke Shields” slated for April 3, the 57-year-old model-turned-actress has been sharing insights about her life and career. Speaking with The New Yorker, those revelations included an unexpected outburst from her then-boyfriend and future ex-husband during a guest spot on the popular NBC show.
In the episode, “The One After the Superbowl,” Shields portrayed a stalker to character Joey Tribbiani’s, played by Matt LeBlanc, fictional “Days of Our Lives” character, Dr. Drake Ramoray. As she told the outlet, while filming the scene Andre “stormed out.”
“In the scene, I’m supposed to lick Joey’s fingers, because they’re the hands of a genius, and I want to devour them, and I’m a nut,” she explained. “He was cute–he was, like, ‘I’ve washed my hands and they’re all clean.’ I was, like, ‘I had a mint!'”
Shields went on to explain, “Andre was in the audience supporting me, and he stormed out. He said, ‘Everybody’s making fun of me. You made a fool of me by that behavior.’ I’m, like, ‘It’s comedy! What is the matter with you?’ I learned later that he was addicted to crystal meth at that point, so that irrational behavior I’m sure had something to do with that.”
When Agassi got home, the actress said he, “Smashed all his trophies. Who wins for that? That’s just–don’t!”
According to her, the role had ultimately led to her being offered her own sitcom, “Suddenly Susan,” and the producers of “Friends” were reluctant to include the drama-inducing bit in the final take. As she told it, “We had done it in rehearsal, and they said, ‘It’s too crazy. Don’t do it.’ And I begged for it. ‘It’s so funny. It just makes her crazier. And she’s pretty, so she needs to really be crazy.’ And they were, like, ‘No, no.’ We did the first take, and it was fine.”
“And then the second take, they scream, ‘Shields! Put it back in!’ All of a sudden, the energy changed, and all these men in suits started coming into the studio,” Shields described. “The next day, I was asked if I wanted to do my own television show.”
“And yet this is another example of a victory for Brooke getting co-opted by a man,” the outlet probed, “your boyfriend at the time, Andre Agassi.”
“‘Co-opted’ gives him too much credit,” Shields initially challenged. “It was petulant behavior. Well, I guess you’re right. It co-opted it for me emotionally, because all of a sudden then my focus went to him.”
The couple would go on to have a brief marriage from 1997 to 1999, and their relationship struggles were matched by a slump in Agassi’s career where he fell from a number-one ranking to 141 before returning to the top once more in 1999. Agassi did not respond to requests for comment from The New Yorker.
