Trump responds to the idea of picking DeSantis as his 2024 running mate

Former President Donald J. Trump rejected the idea that he could tab Florida Governor Ron DeSantis as his running mate with the 2024 GOP frontrunner throwing cold water on the speculation before it really begins as the rising Republican star inches closer to jumping into what promises to be a bruising primary battle with his top rival for the White House.

During a call-in appearance to Newsmax host Rob Schmitt’s show, the nation’s 45th president said that the chance that he would tab DeSantis for the bottom half of the GOP ticket if he wins the party’s nomination would be “very unlikely” while strongly suggesting that the Sunshine State leader’s stance on Social Security and Medicare, while he was a member of Congress, will be deal killers with voters.

On Friday’s edition of “Rob Schmitt Tonight,” the former and perhaps future POTUS moderated his volcanic rhetoric against DeSantis whom he has brutalized on his Truth Social platform for months, answering the question as to whether he would consider teaming up with the younger up-and-comer to take on Joe Biden and Kamala Harris who will almost certainly head up the Democratic Party ticket again next year.

After noting that DeSantis has already ruled out a potential stint as Trump’s running mate, Schmitt asked “Was that ever an option for you?”

“No, I never thought of it,” Trump responded. “I think that we have a lot of great people in the Republican Party. I never thought of it. But you know, some people every once in a while mention it, but that’s about it. No, I think that would be a very unlikely alliance.”

Trump then revisited what seems to be a constant burr under his saddle in what he appears to perceive as a lack of gratitude and deference from DeSantis who was able to emerge as Florida’s gubernatorial primary in 2018 after he was endorsed by the then-president, going on to narrowly beat out Democrat Andrew Gillum, a complete moral reprobate whose political career was dealt a perhaps fatal blow when he was caught in a Miami Beach hotel room where he had engaged in a drug-fueled romp with a homosexual escort, showing how Florida had narrowly dodged a bullet.

“Look, I appointed him,” he continued. “He was failing badly in the polls. He was out of politics. He was going to be out of politics and I endorsed him. And he went from a very small number to a very high number and he beat the person who happened to be leading, the secretary of agriculture, his name was Adam Putnam and he went out and he beat him only because of my endorsement,” adding that he also deserved credit for DeSantis’ general election victory against “somebody who was the star of the Democrats” who “turned out to be a crackhead, you know later on. They didn’t know that at the time,” Trump said, referring to the since-disgraced Gillum.

“If you look at his record, he can’t win because he voted against Social Security,” added Trump. “I mean, he voted against things that are so, so important. Medicare, he voted against Medicare. He wanted to raise the age substantially for people getting Social Security,” bringing up what will surely be at the top of the list of the Democrat attacks on DeSantis if he emerges from the primaries as the GOP nominee.

Trump also called DeSantis a “disciple” of Paul Ryan, the former Republican Speaker of the House and the running mate of failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney who gagged away a winnable election against Barack Obama in 2012.

DeSantis has similarly rejected the idea that he would join a Trump ticket.

“I think I’m probably more of an executive guy,” DeSantis said during a Thursday interview on Newsmax. “I think that you want to be able to do things. That’s part of the reason I got into this job is because we have action.”
