WaPo slams state as ‘Florida of the North’ for ‘targeting’ LGBTQ community

The agenda-driven media in America continues to act more like political activists for the Democratic Party than journalists, with the latest example of this assertion being a Washington Post hit piece on Iowa Republicans.

In what amounts to a two-fer, the newspaper owned by Jeff Bezos called Iowa the new “Florida of the North” for taking steps to remove political indoctrination such as queer theory from the classroom, this effort to protect children from sexual instruction being described by Post reporter Annie Gowen as “targeting the LGBTQ community.”

“Republicans in the Iowa legislature, empowered by the state’s recent ‘red wave,’ have embarked on an ambitious new agenda that includes a costly school choice bill and legislation targeting the LGBTQ community, a historic divergence from Iowa’s history as a civil rights bastion,” Gowen wrote.

“A joke among statehouse reporters is that Iowa is becoming the ‘Florida of the North’ — without the beaches,” she added, unwittingly exposing the cliquish nature of journalists.

The tie to Florida allowed for the further demonization of Gov. Ron DeSantis, who seems to be an even greater concern to the media than Donald Trump given their enthusiasm for going after the popular Republican.

Trump-endorsed Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds is targeted for having “helped drive the state’s rightward tilt, shifting to focus on culture-war issues, gun rights and limits on abortion access.” The article cites “critics” to say the Republican governor is “using her agenda to burnish her conservative credentials for the national stage in 2024, although she has so far said she has no intention of leaving Iowa.”

Reynolds is a school choice proponent and considers herself a warrior against the “radical left,” Gowen noted.

“They think patriotism is racist and pornographic library books are education,” Reynolds said last month at a Moms for Liberty town hall. “They believe that the content of our character is less important than the color of our skin. They believe that children should be encouraged to pick their gender and the parents, well, they’re just in the way.”

Gowen draws a connection to Florida’s recently passed Parental Rights in Education bill, which prevents classroom instruction on “sexual orientation” or “gender identity” for K-3 students, a law the media inaccurately portrays as the “Don’t Say Gay” law.

“Even as teens draped in rainbow flags crowded into the Capitol rotunda chanting ‘We say gay’ on March 8, Iowa lawmakers quickly passed three bills related to gay and transgender rights, culminating with a measure to ban gender-affirming care for transgender youth that is awaiting Republican Gov. Kim Reynolds’s signature,” she wrote.

This being the so-called “targeting” of the LGBTQ community.

It’s surely not by accident that the Post included a quote from Keenan Crow, a director of an LGBTQ+ advocacy group, regurgitating the comparison to Florida.

“From about 2019 until this year, attacks on LGBTQ Iowans have been exponentially increasing,” Crow said. “I believe it’s primarily because of the governor and her shifting priorities. It seems for whatever reason, she wants Iowa to be more like Florida.”
