Biden signs Hawley’s COVID declassification bill on origins of virus: ‘Time for accountability’

President Joe Biden officially signed Sen. Josh Hawley’s COVID declassification bill on Monday that makes public the intelligence reports on the origins of the virus believed to have leaked from a Chinese bio lab, which the senator called a “huge victory for transparency.”

Hawley is now declaring that holding federal bureaucrats accountable comes next.

“Today President Biden finally signed my bill to declassify what the government knows about Covid origins. Let the people see for themselves! Huge victory for transparency. Now time for accountability,” Hawley (R-MO) proclaimed on Twitter.

Republicans have been calling for the release of the intelligence for a long time. They want to know exactly what the federal government knew about the origins of the virus at the end of 2019 when the pandemic spread across the United States and the globe.

The bill passed unanimously in the House and the Senate before making its way to Biden’s desk.

Biden signed the “COVID-19 Origin Act of 2023” which purportedly will reveal what is known about the virus that allegedly came from the Chinese lab. It allows the Office of the Director of National Intelligence to declassify intelligence related to China’s Wuhan Institute of Virology, from where many experts believe the pandemic originated.

The action requires US intelligence agencies to reveal all information related to the origins of COVID-19 to be declassified within 90 days of the law’s enactment.

The president vaguely claimed that his administration would share “as much” as possible without compromising national security. That means that his administration could pretty much stonewall Republicans and continue to conceal vital information concerning the origins of the virus.

“My Administration will continue to review all classified information relating to COVID–19’s origins, including potential links to the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” Biden said in a statement. “In implementing this legislation, my Administration will declassify and share as much of that information as possible, consistent with my constitutional authority to protect against the disclosure of information that would harm national security.”

Biden signed the bill over three years after the pandemic began. He does so as he’s coming under fire for possible corruption concerning China allegedly giving funds to the president’s family.

The Chairman of the newly-formed House Select Committee on China, Rep. Mike Gallagher, pointed out that a great deal of information on the origins of COVID is still not publicly known.

“It’s been three years since COVID-19 upended our lives, and we’re still asking basic questions about the origins of this virus. That’s unacceptable,” he told Fox News Digital in a previous interview.

“The question of how this pandemic began is the most important question in the world, and we should not continue to waste precious time waiting for the Chinese Communist Party to suddenly cooperate with US officials and open up access to the Wuhan Institute of Virology,” he added.

The Wall Street Journal reported in February that the Energy Department assessed that the pandemic likely came from the alleged Chinese laboratory leak. Beijing has heatedly denied the charge.
