Trump says Pence is to blame for Jan 6 riot, sets sights on getting ‘big problem’ McConnell ‘the hell out’

Former President Donald Trump went on a tear Monday against the Washington, D.C. swamp and reignited the conflict between himself and supposed allies former Vice President Mike Pence and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.)

A full day of engagement, as the president headed to Iowa to rally for his 2024 campaign, included a caps-lock heavy Truth Social blast about the partisan witch hunts against him, but was not without positivity even as he remarked on the “disaster” that the Kentucky lawmaker was. Trump also made time to remind the press aboard his plane en route to his Davenport, Iowa rally that the Capitol breach on Jan. 6, 2021 was chiefly the fault of Pence.

“Had he sent the votes back to the legislatures, they wouldn’t have had a problem with Jan. 6, so in many ways you can blame him for Jan. 6,” the Washington Post reported of Trump’s comments about the protesters’ motivations.

“Had he sent them back to Pennsylvania, Georgia, Arizona, the states, I believe, number one, you would have had a different outcome. But I also believe you wouldn’t have had ‘Jan. 6’ as we call it,” he continued. “He had the right to send them back, otherwise they wouldn’t have changed the Voting Act. They all said, ‘He didn’t have any rights at all, he was a human conveyor belt, he had no rights even if it was fraud.’ And then the day after he did it, they said, ‘Now we’re going to change it so he doesn’t do it.’ Meaning, you understand that, meaning he had the right to do it.”

The remarks came on the heels of Pence asserting to Deadline over the weekend, “I was not afraid but I was angry. President Trump was wrong. I had no right to overturn the election. And his reckless words endangered my family and everyone at the Capitol that day. And I know that history will hold Donald Trump accountable.”

Trump later turned his sights on the positive signs coming from Congress that included former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) losing the gavel and the eventful voting marathon that landed Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) with the speakership, leaving “big problem” McConnell as another stumbling block.

“I actually think that was like a cleansing action, it was a great thing that happened and there’s great unity in Congress,” the president said before turning to the problem as he saw it. “We do have to do something about Mitch McConnell. He’s a disaster.”

Referencing the approximate number of Republicans it takes to carry the split Senate over the 60-vote threshold for many pieces of legislation, Trump said, “He gets his 10 guys and they give [President Joe] Biden whatever they want. There’s something going on. It doesn’t make sense.”

“Nobody can understand it. We gotta get him the hell out. He’s a problem, big problem. In the meantime, I hope he’s feeling well,” the president said in passing about McConnell’s recent hospital stay, “but he’s a big problem.”

Previously, Trump had aligned Pence and McConnell as holding responsibility for Biden’s certification victory, despite the believed election integrity issues, and he had said in February 2022, “Just saw Mike Pence’s statement on the fact that he had no right to do anything with respect to the Electoral Vote Count, other than being an automatic conveyor belt for the Old Crow Mitch McConnell to get Biden elected President as quickly as possible. Well, the Vice President’s position is not an automatic conveyor if obvious signs of voter fraud or irregularities exist.”

While the former VP and senator have both held firm to their positions that not only finalized the outcome of the 2020 election but led to further ostracization of the once commander in chief, as well as a wasteful and likely fraudulent sham committee, the president took to Truth Social to remind the public of the number of attacks against him that had proven to be false.

“These Four Radical Left investigations of your all time favorite President, ME, is just a continuation of the most disgusting Witch Hunt in the HISTORY of our Country,” he wrote Monday. “No different than the RUSSIA, RUSSIA, RUSSIA HOAX, the UKRAINE, UKRAINE, UKRAINE IMPEACHMENT SCAM, the SPYING ON MY CAMPAIGN, the ‘NO COLLUSION’ MUELLER REPORT, etc. Whether it’s the MAR-a-LAGO RAID, the UNSELECT COMMITTEE HOAX, the PERFECT GEORGIA PHONE CALL, or the STORMY ‘HORSEFACE’ [DANIELS] EXTORTION PLOT, ALL SICK, FAKE NEWS!”
