The suspected Gulf Cartel assassins were pictured smirking, despite allegedly being severely beaten, as they were taken into custody in the border city of Matamoros on Wednesday night. The apology note was left on a windshield written in Spanish and stated that the bosses were happy to hand over those who were responsible for killing the Americans.

“The same people [from the Gulf Cartel] took the photos of the five men and the banner and sent them to the police. They also called the emergency number to alert authorities of the message they left downtown,” a source told Vice.

The killers are reportedly part of the notorious Scorpions, which is an armed branch of the Gulf Cartel. The bosses claimed that they were operating outside of “cartel rules” and they “condemn” the attack.

“The Gulf Cartel’s Scorpions Group strongly condemns the events of last Friday, March 3 where unfortunately an ‘innocent’ working mother died and 4 American citizens were ‘kidnapped’ of which 2 died,” the letter stated. “And for this reason, we have decided to hand over those involved and directly responsible for the facts who at all times acted under their own determination and indiscipline and against the rules that ‘The CDG’ has always operated, respecting the life and integrity of the innocent,” the cartel continued.

“The CDG apologizes to Matamoran society, the relatives of Mrs. Arely, the American individuals and families affected. The CDG asks society to be calm because we are committed to not repeating those errors caused by indiscipline and whoever is responsible will pay!!” the bosses declared.

The Mexican government previously announced on Thursday that it was looking into whether the kidnapping “could be directly linked to drug trafficking.” The families of those involved claim that the group was there for a cheap tummy tuck surgery.

According to the Daily Mail, a spokesman for the Tamaulipas State Attorney General’s Office reported that the five men have not been brought up on charges yet.

Law enforcement investigators have evidently located and confiscated an ambulance the cartel used to drive the American victims to a local clinic for treatment following the altercation. according to the prosecutor’s office.

The tragedy occurred after South Carolina residents Latavia McGee, her cousin Shaeed Woodward and her friends Zindell Brown and Eric James crossed into Matamoros at approximately 9 am last Friday. They were attacked about two hours later.

McGee was seen being forced into the flatbed of a pickup truck by cartel members. Then the bodies of Woodward, Brown, and James were dumped in the vehicle.

According to an internal document obtained by Reuters, Mexican law enforcement agents are investigating whether the cartel members who kidnapped the Americans thought they were encroaching on their territory.

The Daily Mail is reporting that the four Americans who were kidnapped have lengthy rap sheets. Brown and Woodard had drug-related offenses on their records.

Mexican authorities are claiming “it cannot be ruled out that the attack against (the Americans) could be directly linked to drug trafficking operations.”

McGee, who is a mother of five, and James, who was shot in the leg, were rescued from a stash house for the cartel that was located six and a half miles away from El Tecolote on Tuesday morning. The bodies of Brown and Woodward were also found in the house.

The Mexican national who was killed was Matamoros resident Arely Servando, 33. She was reportedly struck by a stray bullet and killed at the scene.
