Former Maryland governor Larry Hogan announces he will not run in 2024 GOP ‘pileup’

Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan cares deeply about the Republican Party.

He cares more about the Party than he does about his own future.

So, in what he would have you believe is the selfless act of a determined martyr, Hogan has announced that he will not be seeking the Grand Old Party’s nomination for president in 2024.

It has nothing to do with the fact that Satan would be snow-skiing before he’d actually receive the party’s nomination — this is about preventing Donald Trump from getting it.

“I would never run for president to sell books or position myself for a cabinet role,” Hogan shared Sunday morning on Twitter. “I have long said that I care more about ensuring a future for the Republican Party than securing my own future in the Republican Party. And that is why I will not be seeking the Republican nomination for president.”

“To once again be a successful governing party,” he continued, “we must move on from Donald Trump. There are several competent Republican leaders who have the potential to step up and lead. But the stakes are too high for me to risk being part of another multicar pileup that could potentially help Mr. Trump recapture the nomination.”

Speaking Sunday on CBS’s “Face The Nation,” Hogan said it was “a tough decision.”

“I did give it serious consideration, and I talked to people everywhere, and I talked to my family,” he told Robert Costa. “It was a tough decision, but I’ve decided that I will not be a candidate for the Republican nomination.”

Costa noted that Hogan’s decision isn’t just about not running for president, it’s about not running against Trump, “who’s as tough on his opponents as anyone I’ve ever covered, merciless.”

“Well, that didn’t really scare me,” Hogan replied. “You’re right. It would be a tough race, and he’s very tough. But I beat life-threatening cancer, so having Trump call me names on Twitter didn’t really scare me off.”

A smaller field, he reasoned, would make it harder for Trump to win.

“Right now, you have Trump and [Florida Governor Ron] DeSantis at the top of the field, soaking up all the oxygen, getting all the attention,” he explained, “and then a whole lot of the rest of us in single digits. And the more of them you have, the less chance you have for someone rising up.”

On Twitter, Hogan vowed to back “anyone who shares that common sense conservative vision for the Republican Party and can get us back to winning elections again.”

“Our nation faces great challenges; we can’t afford to be consumed by the prettiest grievances,” he wrote. “We can push back and defeat the excesses of elitist policies on the left without resorting to angry, divisive and performative politics.”

It’s a sentiment that echoes that of another so-called “Republican,” former speaker Paul Ryan, who stated recently that he won’t attend the Republican National Convention (RNC) if Donald Trump is the GOP’s nominee for president.

“If we nominate Trump again, we’re going to lose,” Ryan told FOX6’s Jason Calvi. “It’s just that clear.”

When asked who he would back, Ryan shot back, “That would be the person not named Donald Trump.”

Hogan’s sacrifice for the Republican Party did not receive the gratitude he was, perhaps, expecting.

“His supporter was devastated,” quipped betting analyst and sports columnist Bill Speros.

To which another user replied, “Surely the man’s mother can stay out of this.”

“Nobody would vote for you anyways being a closet Democrat,” another user told Hogan.

“Good,” yet another wrote, “because you are not a Republican.”

And another user simply stated the obvious.

“He had no chance. None. Not even a tiny bit,” the user wrote. “Snowball’s chance in hell would be an overestimate.”
