Walmart announces closure of two stores in Portland

Residents in Portland will be forced to adjust their shopping habits now that Walmart has announced that it is closing its stores in the area, depriving many of a convenient and cost-effective source of groceries and other products at a time of skyrocketing food costs and economic uncertainty.

The retail colossus said that it would be shuttering two superstores in North and Southeast Portland, claiming that the locations were being closed down due to several factors including financial performance, although the company did not cite a proliferation of crime – something which is now commonplace in Democrat-controlled cities – as being among the reasons.

In addition to residents who rely on Walmart for their shopping needs, around 600 employees will be affected when the stores at the Delta Park and Eastport Plaza shopping centers, along with their pharmacies, will cease to operate on March 24. The company said that it would work with customers on how to transfer their prescriptions to other pharmacies.

Employees at the two locations will be given the option to transfer to other locations in the area.

“The decision to close these stores was made after a careful review of their overall performance,” a Walmart spokesperson said of the closures. “We consider many factors, including current and projected financial performance, location, population, customer needs, and the proximity of other nearby stores when making these difficult decisions. After we decide to move forward, our focus is on our associates and their transition, which is the case here.”

“Safeway is the go-to-store if I have to but that’s three times the price I would spend here,” local resident and Walmart shopper Amanda Pahl said, according to local Fox News affiliate KPTV. “What are we going to do? You got to go further, then you have to spend gas money. Might as well pay for it at Safeway at this point.”

“We are grateful to the customers who have given us the privilege of serving them at our Hayden Meadows and Eastport Plaza locations,” the retail giant said in a statement.

In recent years, the Pacific Northwest has deteriorated dramatically as the ruinous effects of one-party Democrat rule and criminal-coddling socialist policies have become more evident with few places more adversely affected than the once-pristine Oregon city which has been wracked by criminality since the 2020 George Floyd “summer of love” race riots with the downtown area being the site of a long-running siege on a federal courthouse by Antifa thugs whose reign of terror was enabled by left-wing leaders like Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler.

Not only is it a crime-ridden hellhole like fellow leftist utopias in San Francisco and Seattle, but Rose City also has become a magnet for homeless vagrants and drug addicts.

According to the Daily Mail, “Portland currently has more than 700 homeless encampments across the city within less than 150 square miles, and the ordeal has also led to the skyrocketing use of cocaine, heroin, LCD and meth, which officials decriminalized in 2020.”

One homeless Portland woman expressed herself in a video that went viral earlier this year.

“It’s a piece of cake really, I mean that’s why you probably got so many out here because they feed you three meals a day, you don’t have to sh*t but stay in your tent or party or if you smoke a lot of dope you can do that,” said the woman who was identified as “Wendy.”

“We have nearly 5,000 stores across the U.S. and unfortunately some do not meet our financial expectations,” the company said in its announcement, according to KPTV. “While our underlying business is strong, these specific stores haven’t performed as well as we hoped.”
