‘Everything is mystical’: Mexican president posts photo of what he claims is mythical woodland elf

Well, here’s one we bet you didn’t have on your 2023 Bingo card.

The President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, posted to Twitter what he claims is a mythical Mayan “little person” known as an “Alux.”

According to Ancient Origins, an “Alux” is “a kind of spiritual little person that causes mayhem, mischief, and destruction wherever it goes.”

Similar to fairies and elves, the Aluxes are believed to reside somewhere in the Yucatan peninsula, and, while they are normally invisible to humans, Mayan legend has it that they can choose to make themselves seen if they’re feeling mischievous or playful. Like fairies, they typically live in the midst of nature, in forests, jungles, fields, caves, and deep stones. They are. however, adaptable, and can survive so long as food, water, and shelter are available.

On Saturday, President Obrador said he had proof that the little sprite-like creatures exist.

“I share two photos of our supervision of the Mayan Train works: one, taken by an engineer three days ago, apparently from an aluxe [sic],” he tweeted, “another, by Diego Prieto of a splendid pre-Hispanic sculpture in Ek Balam.”

“Everything is mystical,” the 69-year-old leader stated.

A Mayan archeological site located roughly 30 miles from Chichen Itza, Ek Balam dates from the Middle Pre-Classic (700-300 B.C) through to the Terminal Classic (900-1100 A.D.) and is “renowned for its depictions of ‘angels’ adorning a stucco frieze,” according to The Mayan Ruins Website.

It is also near a favorite project of Obrador’s — the “Tren Maya,” more than 900 miles of train rails that aims to connect hot tourist destinations such as Cancun to the Mayan temples of the Yucatan Peninsula.

It was while working on that project that an engineer managed to snap a shot of the Alux, according to the president.

Not surprisingly, Twitter had thoughts.

Some were thrilled at the thought of little Mexican elves.

“ELFS ARE REAL,” exclaimed one user. “LETS GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!”

Believers defended the president against naysayers.

“Every civilisation has their own daivas and asuras. Dismissing it just as a pagan ritual is seen as progressive, advanced,” stated one user. “It’s not.”

And others wished President Biden would “sh**post” like his Mexican counterpart.

“We need more presidential sh**posting like this in the US,” one user stated. “Dark Brandon is fine, but what if Joe talked about goblins more?”

However, there are some astute internet sleuths who are claiming the President’s post is nothing but a hoax.

“Yes, Andrés, an engineer three days ago took a photo that has been doing the rounds in Nuevo León since February 2021 and in Thailand since December of that year,” one skeptic replied, referring to two previous articles. “You are sad, very sad… and the country even more… If you believe it, you are stupid… if you know you are lying, you are malicious…”

Now, to be fair, if the critic is correct, there is no evidence that President Obrador knew the photo had been circling on the internet for years.

And the politician is far from alone in his admitted belief that there could be something more to the myths from indigenous cultures.

But it must be noted that his tourist train has received a lot of backlash from people who say he “is splitting the jungle in half.”

According to NBC News, the president’s pet project is “billions of dollars over budget and behind schedule,” and “scientists and activists say the government cut corners in its environmental risk assessments in a bid to complete it while López Obrador is still in office.”

So, if the president were feeling a little Alux-y, what better way to drum up publicity and attract a trainful of tourists than announcing your Yukatan team has spotted a little legend?

Either way, it’s a “mystical” thing to ponder…
