Blood-curdling video shows 10-foot gator mauling to death elderly Florida woman walking her dog

Shocking new video shows the terrifying moment that a massive alligator lunged at an elderly Florida woman walking her small dog near a lake in the moments before it mauled her to death.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday at Spanish Lakes Fairways, a 55-plus community located in Fort Pierce in St. Lucie County on the state’s southeast Atlantic coast when 85-year-old Gloria Serge was dragged off by the 10-foot reptile as she tried to protect her beloved dog Trooper near a retention pond on the property.

Serge’s horrifying fatal encounter with the gator during her stroll around noon at 6788 Picante Circle was witnessed by a neighbor who called 911 as she fought for her life after being dragged into the water by the animal which weighed 600-700 pounds.

She successfully got her pet away from the alligator but it grabbed onto her instead, hauling Serge with it as it retreated back into the water where it had been lurking.

The nightmarish moments when the beast emerged from the water were caught by a wildlife camera at the retirement community and obtained by Inside Edition which aired the footage of the alligator’s attack on the unsuspecting grandmother.

Serge’s neighbor, 76-year-old Carole Thomas told the outlet that she tried in vain to help the woman as she was calling 911, “There’s a woman in the lake. The alligator’s got her!”

“I think she’s gone, oh my God,” the distressed Thomas cried while on the phone, becoming increasingly concerned when she didn’t see her neighbor surface after being dragged into the water by the beast.

Officers from the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission and St. Lucie County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the scene where Serge’s body was recovered from the water, the alligator was captured by a “contracted nuisance alligator trapper” and euthanized.

“The victim has been recovered and a contracted nuisance alligator trapper has captured the alligator involved in the incident,” the FWC said in a statement.

“It was definitely a fight,” trapper Robert Lilly told West Palm Beach NBC affiliate WPTV. “[We] snagged him on the bottom. He never surfaced. He stayed down the whole time. We were able to get a second hook in him and a hard line in him so we could get him up.”

“It’s horrible for her family,” Thomas told Inside Edition. “It’s just horrible, horrible. And her friends, I spoke to a couple of her friends yesterday who are devastated.”

According to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, “Alligators have inhabited Florida’s marshes, swamps, rivers and lakes for many centuries, and are found in all 67 counties. In recent years, Florida has experienced tremendous human population growth. Many residents seek waterfront homes, and increasingly participate in water-related activities. This can result in more frequent alligator-human interactions, and a greater potential for conflict.”

“Although many Floridians have learned to coexist with alligators, the potential for conflict always exists. Serious injuries caused by alligators are rare in Florida, but if you are concerned about an alligator, call FWC’s toll-free Nuisance Alligator Hotline at 866-392-4286. The FWC will dispatch one of its contracted nuisance alligator trappers to resolve the situation,” the agency states on its website.
