‘Race-blind America’ group targets divisive social justice issues being injected into medical school

A group that advocates for a “race-blind America” is focusing its efforts on the University of North Carolina’s (UNC) medical school in a bid to stop them from injecting social justice issues into its curriculum.

A non-profit group, Color Us United (CUU) is dedicated to fighting “those who want to divide America.”

“Our primary purpose is to give voice to you and millions of others who are upset by government, corporate and media claims that America is a hateful country,” the organization states. “We will mount campaigns via all forms of media to push back against those divisive activities. Our campaigns will take many forms, speak out on all forms of media, publish studies and articles, and meet with ‘leaders.'”

The group vows to “make it socially acceptable” for “millions of Americans to advocate for a unified America.”

CUU has set its sights on UNC after the school formed a task force in 2020 “to integrate social justice into the curriculum.”

In its “final report,” the task force found that “social justice was often de-emphasized or ignored outside of the formal Social Health Systems courses.”

Additionally, it claims, “a growing number of medical students reported that the hidden curriculum (i.e. the unwritten, unofficial, and often unintended lessons, values, and perspectives that students learn in school) left them feeling mistreated, discriminated against, and undervalued based on various aspects of their identities.”

“In order to address these findings, the School of Medicine convened the Task Force to Integrate Social Justice into the Curriculum,” the report, which cites data from the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) states.

As per the guidance, UNC requires med students to study issues such as “Unconscious Bias Awareness,” “Understanding and Responding to Microaggressions,” “Understanding how to view and treat patients based on their race,” and “Understanding that America’s medical system is structurally racist,” according to CUU.

“The doctor that treats you should be the most qualified doctor available to you, not the doctor that has received the most amount of social justice training,” CUU states. “Yet that’s exactly what UNC Medical School is doing: replacing vital medical training courses with social justice courses and diminishing the quality of its doctors in the service of a false social justice agenda.”

In a 2022 report, UNC listed the task force recommendations they would adopt.

“Ultimately, it wants all faculty to be trained in these methods and be judged based on their ability to integrate it into their teachings,” the Daily Mail reports.

CUU spokesperson Christian Watson says the policy is an attempt by the university to politicize the medical field and force doctors to become social activists.

“A big part of it is the accrediting agencies that have been taken over by people of some political ideas,” he told the Daily Mail. “The AAMC, the body that accredits all medical schools in America, has certain requirements it has to follow.”

UNC, he added, has taken at least 89 of its social justice ideas from the AAMC.

The university wants to “subject professors to implicit bias training, actively discriminating against whites and Asians,” Watson said. “Teach anti-racism ideology. They’re teaching them how to be anti-racist as opposed to how to be good doctors.”

“North Carolina is the flagship institution, it’s not only subject to AAMC but taxpayer dollars,” Watson said. “We think it’s quite significant taxpayers know what kind of education their doctors get.”

In an effort to put a stop to social justice training at the university, Color Us United is asking 10,000 people to sign a petition opposing the initiatives.

“Using race to treat a person’s individual, unique biology is just bad medicine,” the group states.

While there is room for debate on racism, says Watson, AAMC’s program is “flawed.”

“I think the premise of the program, that we need to integrate social justice into medical education, is flawed. Doctors are not meant to be social activists. Doctors are meant to care for their patients,” he said. “I think the premise of the program, that we need to integrate social justice into medical education, is flawed.
