Crime escalation in major cities did not happen by chance, but progressive mayors like San Francisco’s London Breed seem all too ready to ignore how their practiced Marxism has eroded the safety of citizens as she introduced a new proposal to redirect funds to the police she had worked to take away.
Black Lives Matter brought racial tension and hostility to a boiling point in June 202o just days after George Floyd had died while in police custody. As protests spread across the country, so too did calls to defund the police, which Breed proudly engaged in.
Now, almost three years after the damage was done and the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) is struggling to retain the size of their force and a meaningful presence in the City by the Bay, Breed has painted herself a stalwart defender of law enforcement, backing the blue to the tune of nearly $28 million in additional funding.
Featuring a clip from her State of the City address, the mayor posted to Twitter, “Our police department is suffering from staffing shortages and officers are working overtime to fill shifts and keep residents safe. I am introducing a funding measure to fund more overtime so @SFPD can provide the critical services our residents deserve.”

During the speech, she can be heard decrying “open-air drug dealing” and “home and business break-ins” that require greater numbers of on-the-clock officers to contend.
“Our public safety challenges in San Francisco can’t be met without a police presence,” she continued while hedging her leftist street credentials, “We must hold our officers accountable and continue to push alternatives to police, but this funding is essential to dealing with the crimes that are frustrating our residents & small businesses.”

This was a far cry from the spiel she gave in June 2020 when she led the charge to defund the police in her city and reallocate as much money as possible toward black communities in San Francisco.
In a thread posted on June 4 of that year, Breed began “Decades of disinvestment and racially disparate policies have disproportionately hurt our African-American community in SF. Supervisor @ShamannWalton and I will lead the effort to redirect funding from the @SFPD to support the African-American community in the upcoming budget.”
She continued, “This week has highlighted the devastating impacts of police violence against African-Americans in this country. SF has made substantial progress on police reforms and use of force in recent years, but we know there are structural inequities in our city that continue to this day.”

Such was the contrast Tuesday where she declared “we must enforce the laws” from her ideological implementation of spending cuts that when coupled with the progressive prosecutorial discretion of since ousted, George Soros-backed San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin led to a decline in full-duty officers from 1,872 in 2018 to 1,537 in 2022, according to a report by the San Francisco Examiner.
In addition to decreased presence, the reduced size of the force has led to faltering response times as in 2016 the median wait for a “priority A 911 call” was anywhere from six to seven minutes. Now, that median falls between 10 and 11 minutes for the highest level of emergency.
Rather than offering “I told you sos” to the mayor for coming around to sound thinking, the San Francisco Police Officers Association which had decried Breed’s redirection of funds, lauded her announcement and wrote, “We appreciate Mayor Breed’s additional investment in public safety that will help keep officers on the street & help us do our job more effectively. This is a solid immediate-term solution to our staffing problems. And gives us the ability to work to find ways to retain our current officers and recruit new officers to address our police staffing crisis.”

In addition to funding overtime, the nearly $28 million in funding that represents a 12.8 percent increase in budget from 2021 aims to pay for more police academies as well.
