Harris: ‘The United States has formally determined that Russia has committed crimes against humanity’

The United States has determined that, in its invasion of Ukraine, the Russian military has committed “crimes against humanity.”

Vice President Kamala Harris made the announcement while speaking on Saturday at the Munich Security Conference in Germany.

“From the starting days of this unprovoked war, we have witnessed Russian forces engage in horrendous atrocities and war crimes,” Harris stated. “Their actions are an assault on our common values, an attack on our common humanity.”

“And let us be clear,” she continued. “Russian forces have pursued a widespread and systemic attack against a civilian population. Gruesome acts of murder, torture, rape, and deportation. Executions, killings, beatings, and electrocution. Russian authorities have forcibly deported hundreds of thousands of people from Ukraine to Russia, including children.”

Strangely, Harris didn’t mention the “summary executions and several cases of torture and ill-treatment” Russian POWs faced at the hands of their Ukrainian captors, as reported by the United Nations.

According to the U.N., “Prisoners of war on both sides of the conflict in Ukraine have told UN human rights investigators that they have been subjected to torture and ill-treatment while held captive.”

It’s an odd omission, considering Harris boasted in Munich about “the importance of gathering facts and holding them up against the law.”

Apparently, when it’s Russian soldiers being “stabbed or given electric shocks with the ‘TAPik’ phone by Ukrainian law enforcement officers or military personnel,” our “common humanity” fares just fine.

“Long before I was vice president of the United States, I spent the majority of my career as a prosecutor, beginning as a young lawyer in the courtroom and later running the California Department of Justice,” Harris told the crowd, gathered to discuss the Feb. 13 release of the Munich Security Report, which includes “exclusive data and graphics on current security policy issues.”

“I know firsthand the importance of gathering facts and holding them up against the law,” America’s Veep continued. “In the case of Russia’s actions in Ukraine, we have examined the evidence. We know the legal standards. And there is no doubt these are crimes against humanity.”

“The United States has formally determined that Russia has committed crimes against humanity,” Harris declared.

If Vice President Harris wasn’t formal enough in her proclamation, Secretary of State Antony Blinken made it super-formal on Twitter.

“Based on the law and available facts, I have determined that members of Russia’s forces and other Russian officials have committed crimes against humanity in Ukraine,” he wrote. “All those responsible for these atrocities must be held accountable.”

His statement mirrored — nearly word-for-word — Harris’s remarks.

“Members of Russia’s forces have committed execution-style killings of Ukrainian men, women, and children; torture of civilians in detention through beatings, electrocution, and mock executions; rape; and, alongside other Russian officials, have deported hundreds of thousands of Ukrainian civilians to Russia, including children who have been forcibly separated from their families,” it reads.

“These acts are not random or spontaneous,” Blinken said. “They are part of the Kremlin’s widespread and systematic attack against Ukraine’s civilian population.”

Online, the formal declaration is fueling speculation.

“Declaring Russia has committed crimes against humanity without any evidence is bringing us one step closer to blackout time,” one user wrote on Twitter. “Deep state panic. Putin must have hard evidence from the biolabs.”

And another user questioned Blinken’s ability to follow up on his determination.

“You can’t even hold your own crooked politicians accountable for their crimes,” the user noted. “Good luck bringing Russians to justice!”
