Cruz throws down with radical Biden nominee who tweeted: ‘Fox News plays a role in destroying democracy’

Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) hammered President Biden’s radical nominee for the Federal Communications Commission, Gigi Sohn, over her vicious bias against Fox News while she sat for her third hearing in front of the Senate Commerce Committee on Tuesday.

Sohn has tweeted out her hatred and disgust for Fox News on numerous occasions. Cruz made a point of highlighting her “vitriolic rhetoric” when it comes to the network because she believed it was aligned with former President Trump.

Cruz read one of Sohn’s abhorrent tweets for the benefit of the committee, “And trust me, the latter have played their own role in destroying democracy and electing autocrats like, say, Fox News.”

“Millions of Americans watch Fox News. You believe Fox News. As you said, this is not a retweet. This is you tweeting that Fox News plays a role in destroying democracy. You understand why millions of people don’t think you’re fair and impartial to regulate communications?” Cruz asked her.

“Fox News is not regulated by the FCC. And yeah, I have some issues with Fox News. I also have some…” Sohn started to respond before Cruz interjected.

“Some issues, destroying democracy, that’s not little. Let’s look at number 16. Senator Sullivan, I asked you about that. You describe Fox News as state-sponsored propaganda. You want to talk about vitriolic rhetoric. Senator Sullivan is right. It’s coming from you. These are your words. What about Fox News is a state sponsor?” Cruz continued.

“You know, you talk a lot about private actors. Last I checked, Fox News is not part of the government. I want you to explain those two words: ‘State-sponsored.’ Why? Because ‘state-sponsored’ suggests that at the FCC you would use government regulatory power to go after them and silence them. What did you mean by that?” he demanded.

“What I meant by that, and again, remember, I regretted the tone of that was that they were very, very, very close to the Trump administration. And the two of them were sort of interacting. That’s why I called them state-sponsored,” Sohn said, attempting to justify her attack against Fox News.

Then Cruz asked her an obvious question and her reply stretches credulity to the limits of belief.

“Can I ask you one final question? Is MSNBC very, very close to the Biden administration?” the conservative asked.

“I haven’t the slightest idea. I don’t watch it,” Sohn snapped back.

“You don’t watch MSNBC?” Cruz asked, obviously not believing her claim in the least.

“I do not, I don’t watch CNN either. I listen to NPR. Honestly, I don’t,” she responded.

At one point during the hearing, Senator Cruz asserted, “Ms. Sohn portrays herself as a defender of free speech, but she has a history of campaigning to censor conservatives. She calls Fox News, quote, ‘dangerous to our democracy.’ And has urged the FCC to revoke Sinclair’s broadcast licenses.”

“To Ms. Sohn, it seems that conservative speech is worse than obscenity,” he claimed.

“Unfortunately, that is the exact intent of the past 15 months of false and misleading attacks on my record and on my character,” Sohn contended in response.

“My industry opponents have hidden behind dark money groups and surrogates because they fear a pragmatic, pro-competition, pro-consumer policymaker who will support policies that will bring more, faster, and lower-priced broadband and new voices to your constituents,” she declared, alluding to being a proponent of Net Neutrality.

That kind of response is why Cruz contends that Sohn is “an extreme partisan who lacks the impartiality and candor necessary to sit on FCC.” He also made that crystal clear in his opening statement at the hearing.

“I think she is wholly unqualified to be on the FCC,” Cruz told the Washington Examiner following the hearing. “Her record demonstrates extreme partisan bias, multiple conflicts of interest, and I don’t think she has the votes to be confirmed. I don’t know why the White House is wasting its time with the nomination.”

Cruz also believes that Sohn is an unabashed liar.

Sohn’s campaign contributions funded Sens. Catherine Cortez Masto (D-NV), John Fetterman (D-PA), Raphael Warnock (D-GA), and Michael Bennet (D-CO). Watchdog groups are calling on the recipients to recuse themselves from the vote for her confirmation. If confirmed, Sohn would become the first LGBT commissioner.

“Do you think it’s poor judgment to cut checks to senators who are voting on your nomination while it’s pending?” Cruz asked during the hearing. “No other nominee that we could find has ever done that.”

“Relatively small donations – no I don’t,” Sohn answered.

Sohn was also blasted by Sen. J.D. Vance (R-OH) during the hearing for frequently using racially inflammatory language.

“And I quote, ‘President Obama is a raggedy black supremacist president and his cowardly enablers would rather kill everybody than stop killing white people.’ Do you think a person – yes or no – who says that should be appointed to the FCC?” Vance asked Sohn during the hearing.

Sohn said she needed more context regarding the comment.

“In fact, you re-tweeted the exact same thing only with President Trump instead of President Obama, and the races reversed,” Vance charged.
