New footage shows double amputee who was shot by cops after he jumped from wheelchair, stabbed a man

California police have released video footage of a double amputee man who jumped out of his wheelchair, chased a stranger, and stabbed him with a 12-inch butcher knife before police caught up with him, shooting and killing the suspect as he swung the knife at them.

The footage clearly shows Anthony Lowe Jr., a 36-year-old father-of-two and a double amputee, chasing a man and stabbing him in the torso on the sidewalk after jumping out of his wheelchair at a Shell gas station. Moments later police shot and killed him.

The victim is in critical condition and claims he did not know Lowe. He thought he was punched, but he was stabbed below his armpit, puncturing his lung. He realized he had been stabbed as blood gushed out and he stumbled into the street.

“As I was crossing the street, I noticed halfway down the crossing… when the green light was on for me to cross the street. I know that he got off his wheelchair and had to stop and takes about three or four steps and looks at me, but I think nothing of it, right? So when we were at the same level – me and him – on the side, he just told me, ‘Are you all right?’ And I had my hand as well because I carried a black duffel bag. I try and look at it and I go, ‘Yes.’ And at that time, he just punched me. But I did see the knife on him. And I took two steps forward. And that’s when I noticed the blood gushing out of [the] bottom of my armpit,” Ramiro told Fox 11.

A stranger called 911 and applied pressure telling Ramiro to hold on.

Minutes later as the police responded, the suspect was tasered twice with no response and refused to drop the knife before he was shot by officers in Huntington Park near Los Angeles.

Lowe’s family contends that he suffered from depression, according to the Daily Mail. They are enraged over the shooting and killing of the suspect due to his disability, charging that he posed no danger to the officers despite all evidence to the contrary.

The family is planning on filing a lawsuit against the police department over the incident and they want the officers involved prosecuted, claiming they could have used alternative methods to subdue Lowe. That may be hard to do after viewing the footage that was released.

Previous footage showed Lowe walking with the knife in his hand away from the police. As officers tried to detain Lowe with guns drawn, he can be seen raising the knife at them and swinging it in a threatening gesture. At that point, police shot and killed Lowe.

Attorney Annee Della Donna, who is representing Lowe’s mother, suggested that the officers could have used their vehicles to block him or used rubber bullets. She argues that shooting Lowe was unnecessary.

“They could have pulled their shields out of their vehicles if they were worried about getting hit by the knife. So many other options than executing him on the streets,” the attorney stated.

“They murdered my son, in a wheelchair with no legs. They do need to do something about it,” his mother, Dorothy Lowe, proclaimed at a press conference last week. “Nothing but the truth and justice for my son. My son was murdered. Anthony was a good person. He was always there for his family. He was our protector. I want to achieve truth and justice because if anybody else would have shot Anthony, with him being a disabled person, they would be in jail now for murder.”

According to the family, Lowe lost the lower half of his legs in a recent altercation with police in Texas. Since then, he had been living with his mother.

Although Lowe did not have a criminal record in Los Angeles County, he had reportedly been arrested by police for a 2007 warrant for robbery and petty theft on April 20, 2021. The charges were dismissed following a preliminary hearing on May 4, 2021, according to the Daily Mail.

Huntington Park Police Chief Cosme Lozano released the video in order to facilitate transparency over the altercation.

“I fully recognize the need for answers and the impulse to rush to judgment, but we must allow peace and patience to guide us through this process,” Lozano remarked during a press conference.

The LA County Sheriff’s department is leading the investigation into the fatal shooting.
