Tennessee lawmakers seek to ban drag shows on public property with new bill

Tennessee GOP lawmakers are taking on the scourge of transgender indoctrination of children at drag shows, a phenomenon that has received increased attention as decent people have been pushing back against the lewd and lascivious events where men dressed up as women shake their stuff in front of impressionable youngsters.

On Tuesday, a bill that would ban drag shows on public property in the Volunteer State advanced in the state legislature after it was approved by the Tennessee House Criminal Justice Subcommittee and will now go to the full committee, according to a report by Nashville Fox News affiliate FOX 17.

“This is a common-sense child safety bill,” said Republican Rep. Chris Todd who sponsored the bill, HB. 9, which bans “topless dancers, go-go dancers, exotic dancers, strippers, male or female impersonators” from performances on public property where their acts could be seen by persons who are not adults.

The legislation seeks to prohibit “adult cabaret” performances that appeal “to a prurient interest” that is “harmful to minors, a measure to protect children from the graphic, sexually explicit content of drag shows which have become commonplace across America over the past several years as a key facet of the “woke” left’s relentless advancement of the transgender agenda which increasingly has targeted kids in a manner that some have likened to grooming.

“This legislation is about protecting children. There are certain performances, movies, and places that are inappropriate for children,” said Tenn. Senate Majority Leader Jack Johnson who brought legislation forward in conjunction with his bill limiting sexually mutilating “gender care” surgeries for minors late last year.

“Just as current law prohibits strip clubs from admitting children, this legislation would also prohibit sexually explicit adult entertainment from being performed on public property or any non-age-restricted private property where a minor could be present. This is a common-sense measure with broad support from Tennesseans,” Johnson added. “It also gives confidence to parents that they can take their kids to a public or private show and will not be blindsided by a sexualized performance.”

Rep. Todd took to Twitter to warn against the “overt liberal spin” from the media on the legislative efforts to protect children from left-wing ideological predators.

Tennessee Democrats lashed out with Knoxville Rep. Gloria Johnson claiming that the bill was directed “at hate” and could have the unintentional consequence of preventing big-name performers like singer Harry Styles, who is known for his flamboyance, from performing in the state.

“I am curious as to why dancing but here’s nothing sexual in nature to these things,” Johnson said during a committee hearing on January 31. “I don’t know if you have been to drag shows, I have. I have seen things in the community and I have not seen what people are saying is happening. I am curious about how many drag shows you’ve been to.”

“Also I am thinking about why we’re targeting this because I am thinking about a place where men wear tights like WWE wrestling where at least one-third of the audience is children and do things like handcuff their opponent to a rail and shock their testicles,” the Democrat added.  “I think that’s kind of bad. But somehow someone dressing up and dancing is the problem? Because I can tell you that people at drag shows have more clothing on, as a rule, than folks in wrestling.”

“A violation of this bill would result in a Class A misdemeanor, and a second or subsequent offense would result in a Class E felony,” according to Chattanooga.com.
