Woman arrested for punching 2 NYPD cops during Tyre Nichols protest released without bail

Once again, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg is showing his disregard for the safety of New York City residents and police, by releasing a violent person with a violent past out on the streets without bail.

Candy Nicole, 25, was part of the violent mob that descended on Times Square on Friday to protest the death of Tyre Nichols after bodycam footage was released showing he was savagely beaten by five Memphis police officers.

She and two other protestors were arrested.

Nicole “was charged with assault, hate crime assault, and two counts of obstruction of governmental administration for punching a cop in the nose and another in the head in the Friday night fracas,” the NYPD said, according to the New York Post.

And Nicole had a rap sheet, the Daily Mail reports. Previously, she had been arrested for “grabbing a male partner’s testicles during an argument.”

After a brief appearance in New York County Criminal Court, during which Bragg’s office declined to object, the judge released Nicole on her own recognizance on Saturday.

According to Nicole’s lawyer, Caroline Glickler, Nicole “maintains her innocence.”

In fact, Glickler said, her client was a victim of “unnecessary police force” during Friday’s protest.

Of the three arrested, she is the only one to face a charge more serious than a misdemeanor.

Things turned violent in Times Square after Argenis Rivera, 33, jumped on top of a marked police cruiser and kicked in the windshield. He was punching through the shattered glass when NYPD dragged him off the hood.

Rivera, The Post reported on Saturday, is “a career criminal with a violent past.”

Speaking anonymously with the outlet, Rivera’s parents said their son was always “difficult to control” and “always did what he wanted” as a child.

In October, he was arrested for allegedly strangling a mom in Chelsea. At the time of the attack, she was pushing her 2-year-old in a stroller.

He then assaulted another woman, police said.

“In that incident, Rivera allegedly punched the mom in the face and began choking her while screaming, ‘I am not letting go until police come! … I want to die by police,'” according to The Post. “He then turned to a woman sitting on a bench nearby, and pressed keys to her throat and said, ‘Go ahead call the cops I don’t care,’ punched and her and pinned her to the ground, the NYPD said Saturday.”

Thanks to authorities pointing that out, Rivera was held on $10,000 bail.

But the stay in jail was brief.

“He faces a criminal mischief charge for destroying the NYPD cruiser’s windshield,” The Post reports. “A lawyer for Rivera asked for house arrest and electronic monitoring if he was released, and a judge agreed.”

Rounding out the trio of protestors is Katherine Stone, 34.

She defaced a police car, authorities said, and “was issued a desk appearance ticket for criminal mischief and possessing graffiti tools.”
